Realistically, short term, it's a no-win situation for any manager they hire. Why would they throw Sandberg under the bus and make him look like the scapegoat?

Just been announced that Epstein did place a call to Sandberg to tell him that he WON'T be the Cubs' manager in 2012, nor are they going to interview him. So you can scratch his name off the list of potentials.

On a related note, Sandberg thought that the phone call was a nice gesture on Theo's part.

Sam I am getting scared as lately, I have found myself agreeing with a good amount of what you say and this comment is no exception. Sandberg would be in a no win situation if he was given this job.

The Chicago Tribune is now saying that the Cardinals have been given permission by the Phillies to talk to Sandberg as a LaRussa replacement

If the Cardinals make an offer, Ryno has to take it, though I don't see them going with him. Oquendo should get the Cardinals job. He's put in the dues and if he is capable they need to reward him.

Funny how things come full circle:

Martinez has been bench coach in Tampa Bay for the last four years under Joe Maddon. Maddon was a respected coach under Mike Scioscia for many years, and it is presumed Martinez has the same sort of pedigree. He's also a former Cub, originally drafted by the organization. If he's hired, he is in a way the anti-Sandberg. He was traded away by the Cubs in 1988 when there were rumors flying (never corroborated) that he was fooling around with Sandberg's first wife Cindy.

Always funny when people want "managerial experience". Just means they got fired once already.

No way Cardinals hire Ryno, not only would Cubs fans blow a gasket, me included, but Cardinal fans would blow a gasket if Oquendo wasn't hired!

I think it would be a slap in the face to the Cubs if the Cardinals hired Ryan. I also think it would be a slap in the face to Jose Oquendo if the Cardinals hired Sandberg.

I'm ready to be slapped in the face. Someone give the man a job. Besides, St. Louis is only a 6-hour drive for me.

Bad news for Ryno fans.............

“The next manager must have leadership and communication skills; he must place an emphasis on preparation and accountability; he must establish high standards and a winning culture; he must have integrity and an open mind; and he must have managerial or coaching experience at the major league level,” Epstein said.

Epstein spoke with Sandberg on Wednesday and let him know that he wasn’t in the Cubs’ plans.

Sounds like Ryne Sandberg and Terry Francona are out.

Why is everyone not even thinking about Bob Brenly? He is the best man for the job.

As a Cubs fan, I would be Ok with that move. He is pretty critical as a commentator, maybe that is what the Cubs need.
