As an adjuster, I have handled some claims with cards. The reason you have to "schedule" your cards, etc is so we can value them. If you are an active trader/seller than there is no way to quantify them. That is one of the reasons they are apprehensive to cover them. There is a $2500 limit on collectibles without a general endorsement.

My insurance agent told me that my card collection would only be covered up to $1,000 under my homeowner's policy. Even if I have receipts and everything that prove it is worth $50K, my homeowners polict will still only cover $1K. He told me that most people don't understand this, and that I need a separate policy if I want them covered. Is this common, since you are an adjuster?

yes, you need to schedule it.. meaning.. buy an individual policy that covers xyz vs. a broad coverage meaning.. a, c, f, n is covered by not x and z and maybe m.. *does that make sense?
Example most standard HO policies have coverage for Jewelry to $2500.. Lets say you have a Rolex valued at $11,000.. you would need to buy an individual "rider" or "endorsement" to cover up to that $11,000 appraised value.. Same for cards.. a 48 Babe Ruth is obviously valuable, and you would need it appraised and added to the schedule for coverage
