I was checking Mike Trout's stats on baseball-reference and fangraphs and though he is killing it offensively with a 160 OPS+, I noticed his Defensive WAR is -0.5 on baseball reference and his defensive runs saved on fangraphs is -0.8. I was shocked to see this because of how dominant he was last year. How has he looked in the field this year to the fans who watch him every day?

I place absolutely no faith in defensive metrics.

My understanding of defensive metrics is that they generally require a much larger sample size to reflect accuracy. I'd rather use fielding percentage and my own personal observations of range and arm strength to analyze a player's defensive skills than the various metrics out there.

which is why Fred Lynn deserves the vote over Trout when comparing 75' and 12' seasons for them, respectively

Trout is much better suited for LF. When Bourjos is back, that is where he'll be. Bourjos' speed plays much better in the field while Trout is superior on the base paths.

I don't follow closely but he seemed like a one man highlight reel last season. Has something changed?
