Is there an almanac for minor league cards or a really comprehensive list/site somewhere? Trying to find info on the card below. It has a 1982 stat line (so '83?) and is from the Stockton Ports, set features players in the "Mudville Nine" uniforms. Its the only one I've ever seen and have not been able to find out anything though the set was clearly sponsored by "Tase D Pizza". I assume it was a local thing and without any major stars in the set (only other big leaguer was Bill Wegman) it wasn't highly sought after

You could try asking Dave Webber ([email protected]). He sells MiLB cards (has helped me out many times), and has a comprehensive database of them, so he might know something.

I did all the compiling for the minor league section of the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards and never heard of such an issue. My guess is that is not contemporary with Sveum's Stockton days.

Actually got a quick response from Dave. I don't see anything to believe it was not an '83 team issue based on the checklist and quality of the cards and a business that no longer appears to exist. Anything particular that makes you doubt the age? Thanks

Edit to add- gonna have to figure out what I did with the rest of the "set" but there are 20-25 players, all with '82 stat lines. You siggesting it could it have been some sort of anniversary issue? Team issues are a pain lol

Remember how many people tried to pawn this off as his first card?

I remember the card but not the story! Please remind me, not sure why I'm obsessing haha
Kinda forgot about that one but it is uncanny

Eventually it was figured out that the McGwire, along with I think a Casey Candaele, were issued by the team, probably in 1988, when both guys were just hitting the majors. They were sold through magazine ads, and trickled out through shops and shows throughout 1988-89. A lot like the broders of the time, now that I think of it. The design is very similar to that of the 1987 Anchorage Glacier Pilots team set.

Cool info, and Sveum had a decent rookie year as a SS batting 9th in '87 at thr height of baseball card boom so I can definitely see the possibility of a similar cash grab or at least trying to raise money for a box of balls

So where did you find the Sveum and Wegman cards? Any chance of working backwards through your source to figure out where they got them?

Picked them up on eBay about a year ago. Should have been more on top of it at the time but it was a busy year lol That said, these are the only ones I've ever seen but Dave has a few he says and has 13 or so on his "checklist" but like I said I have 20-25 around here somewhere.
