Which team do you guys view as the likeliest landing spot for Matt Purke? For some reason, I chose to track him very closely for the past year, and I figured him for a top 10 pick, but with this draft class being so murky, it's virtually impossible to tell. I think the best fit for him may be Detroit with their history of getting young arms up quickly and aggressively. Do you see any way one of the bigger market teams end up with a steal late due to signability concerns (there have been some rumors floated about it)? Any insight would be appreciated.

Yes, he apparantly does have signability concerns, so expect a bigger market team to take him. He might last all the way down to the Sox or Yanks.

For being the actual league these prospects strive to play in, they are so behind in their knowledge about prospects. I never put faith into their columns, top 100 lists, organizational reports, and mock drafts. It's actually quite sad to see.

Money Matters

It’s still too early to get a good sense of how far first-round talents might drop because of signability. As of now, the three most likely candidates for a significant plunge are Cartersville (Ga.) HS outfielder Donavan Tate, Westminster Christian Academy (St. Louis) righthander Jacob Turner and Klein HS (Spring, Texas) lefty Matthew Purke.

Tate, the best high school position player and top athlete in the draft, has more leverage than most draftees. In addition to his considerable ceiling in baseball, he’s also a football star who has committed to play both sports at North Carolina. He’s the son of former NFL running back Lars Tate. Teams believe it may take $6 million to sign Tate, though MLB rules for two-sport athletes would allow a club to spread that money over as many as five years.

The Scott Boras Corp. is advising both Tate and Turner, currently the highest-rated prep pitcher on Baseball America’s work-in-progress Top 200 Prospects list. Clubs think that Turner, who has been touching 97-98 mph with his fastball and backing it up with an overpowering curveball recently, will seek a $7 million payday. That would match the largest guarantee ever given to a high schooler, as both Josh Beckett (Marlins, 1999) and Rick Porcello (Tigers, 2007) signed big league deals for that amount. Porcello is another Boras client. Like Tate, Turner has committed to North Carolina

Purke, who ranks right behind Capistrano Valley HS (Mission Viejo, Calif.) ace Tyler Matzek as the top high school lefties in the draft, is advised by Peter Vescovo’s Select Sports Group. It may take a big league contract equivalent to what the elite college pitchers usually get ($3 million bonus, $5 million total value) to sign Purke away from Texas Christian.

From information we’ve been able to piece together, it appears that MLB will maintain the status quo with its recommendations for bonus slots.

Though the declining economy may lead to teams being more financially conservative this summer after spending a record $188 million on the draft in 2008. When MLB tried to slash slots by 10 percent in 2007, holdouts increased and bonuses rose over 2006 levels anyway.

It's funny they don't mention Grant Green in the "Scott Boras Corp" article.

Personally, if Green fell to the Yanks late in the first round, I would be an extremely happy man!

Jaypers, thanks for posting.
I have to seriously question any list with Minor going 3rd. I can't even imagine him going higher than 8th at the most and even that would be to clubs who are overly-concerned about slot spending this year. And Trout at 6? Love the tools and the make-up, and he could go 9th to the Tigers, but SF has basically made it known that they are willing to spend a little this year, so you have to go Tate there instead of Trout - can't imagine anyone's board looks any different.

I really want the Giants to get Tate or Purke. Been saying that for a while, nots ure if it'll happen or not. The Giants are WILLING to spend big bucks. Posey has paid out for them so far :)

+1
Tate's $6 mil. asking price is not a problem for them, and if he's there at 6 I would be stunned if they passed.
Note: his asking price is the same as Posey's deal, but Tate will qualify for a two-sport contract which will make allowances for his contract to be spread out more than a normal draftee (most recent example of this was Tim Beckham).

Which is either the result of the Major League team sucking for years, or good development in the minors. I'll go with the former.

I'm wondering what Jacob Turner has done to improve his stock in the past 2 weeks. BA wasn't high on him, now they are.

To summarize BA's scouting report of Turner (subscriber only material):

[*]Has an easy 3/4 delivery that makes his 92-94 FB seem faster.
[*]Knows how to spin a big breaking CB.
[*]Good CU in the making.
[*]Will gain consistency of his CB with experience.
[*]Has benefitted from tutoring from established ML'ers.

Here's to another top draft pick in 2010. Although the way the standings are today, albeit with 120 games still to play, the Giants would pick 15th in 2010. Just bad enough to have their 1st round pick protected.

I've liked him for a while as the best right handed HS arm in the draft, but I still think he drops to late first round. Hopefully with the Yanks or Sox.
