Every year there are players who were former top prospects who are already "busts" in the eyes of many in the hobby who break out. For some these players offer lost cost high potential investments.

This is an area I particularly like. Not all these players fit the exact criteria, but all are players who are seemingly in a good position to post the stats that could net nice returns.

Jason Bay- Not a bust by any stretch of the imagination, but it's hard to imagine playing in NY that his only RC Auto should stay at the $15-$25 range that it is currently at. Citi Field is a tough place to hit, but at that price...

Cameron Maybin- Sure the K's have scared people away, but he's still just a kid and should be batting #2 in the Marlins line-up this season. It's a spot in the order that should allow him many opportunities and he's still a great talent.

Carlos Quentin- Coming off an injury plagued season in which he still had 21 homers in just 351 at-bats. He'll be 27 this season and if healthy can put up big numbers.

BJ Upton- He seems like he's been around forever but he's still just 25 this season. Reports are that his attitude has improved (while I do take all Spring Training reports with a grain of salt, it is still nice to hear) and many have speculated that last seasons lack of power was due to the effects of the bum shoulder the year before. It does not explain his power in the Playoffs of 08, but he's young enough with enough talent to still become a great player and if he adds some power to his stolen bases he'll be a bonafide superstar.

Francisco Liriano- I wasn't sure about including him since his only RC card is still not too cheap, but if he can come close to what he was for 1/2 a season before injury, the card could easily double or triple and reports from camp this season have been positive.

I'm sure there are other players. I left out David Wright and Jose Reyes though a return to superstardom for each would likely bring nice increases to their cards. Jake Peavy would also see a nice rebound a with a solid season.

I definitely agree with Jason Bay, I think his finest autos are a solid buy at the price range you listed.

Phil Hughes - has the opportunity for the stars to align and his cards to shoot up (though probably not to the levels they were at when he was the #1 SP prospect in the minors and pegged as the Yankees' savior).

Matt Laporta - given a starting gig (be it LF or 1B currently with Branyan on the DL) after many have written him off (for whatever reason ... baffles me) - i expect a 30 HR season if he stays healthy.

Let's add:

Jeff Niemann - quietly had arguably the best rookie SP season last year, but still gets no hobby love. He's 6'9", been throwing great in ST, and is going to be the Rays' #3 SP. His great rookie #s in the AL East tell me he could be something big (not just literally).

I agree with you on Quentin but not anyone else, especially Bay at Citi field, I don't think he'll do better there than Fenway and if his cards didn't jump after he went to the Red Sox I doubt they'll jump now.
-A name I will throw in here is Delmon Young. Had a very rough past year and is looking better so far.
-Clint Barmes is looking real good this spring after being injured and splitting time with Baker,Stewart and Quintanilla the past couple years.
-And Finally Rickie Weeks is picking up where he left off before he got injured last year where he hit 9 HR in 37 games!

I still like Matt Garza.

Then again, I'm not a prospector and it's mainly because of a box pull.

Nice choice in Weeks.

As for bay, his Finest were at mid-$40's. All it would take is a return to those number and the people who paid $18 or so will have more than doubled up.

Delmon I'm sitting on a ton of stuff, but I don't have high hopes. He's still young though...

Niemann is a guy I didn't list because he did well last season, his low prices are not a result of poor performance. I'd put Jon Lester in the same category, a guy whose prices have not matched his performance.

How about Johnathan Sanchez? Pitched well and i think he had a 3.6 or 3.8 ERA after throwing the no hitter (confidence in pitches, gained better command thusly) . He had a 9.8 K/9 ratio i believe.

Delmon Young

This guy is still a kid and should get a better chance to shine this season.

I have been stockpiling his stuff for 2 months now.......$3K worth. He is my biggest acquisition of the offseason and his stuff definitely wasn't cheap.

If he can't produce in that lineup I will do this: ::facepalm::

Lincecum. Laugh if you will, but he his stuff has room to grow considerably when he gets hot.......again. He is one of the surest things with his track record for dominating.

I wouldn't be surprised to see his base chrome hit 175 in two months.....I feel they will definitely score more runs then last year and Sandoval is a HUGE cog in the offense's wheel.

This guy is not a true sleeper, just as many others in this thread aren't true sleepers.
But I will go with Justin Upton.

To me he is just as talented or MORE talented than Jason Heyward and look at his prices. I think a .300 avg with 35 Hr and 115 Rbi along with 30 SB's is not a stretch one bit.

I agree. Huge buy-in though, huge risk.

I am not in love with their lineup though.
