Every year there are players who were former top prospects who are already "busts" in the eyes of many in the hobby who break out. For some these players offer lost cost high potential investments.
This is an area I particularly like. Not all these players fit the exact criteria, but all are players who are seemingly in a good position to post the stats that could net nice returns.
Jason Bay- Not a bust by any stretch of the imagination, but it's hard to imagine playing in NY that his only RC Auto should stay at the $15-$25 range that it is currently at. Citi Field is a tough place to hit, but at that price...
Cameron Maybin- Sure the K's have scared people away, but he's still just a kid and should be batting #2 in the Marlins line-up this season. It's a spot in the order that should allow him many opportunities and he's still a great talent.
Carlos Quentin- Coming off an injury plagued season in which he still had 21 homers in just 351 at-bats. He'll be 27 this season and if healthy can put up big numbers.
BJ Upton- He seems like he's been around forever but he's still just 25 this season. Reports are that his attitude has improved (while I do take all Spring Training reports with a grain of salt, it is still nice to hear) and many have speculated that last seasons lack of power was due to the effects of the bum shoulder the year before. It does not explain his power in the Playoffs of 08, but he's young enough with enough talent to still become a great player and if he adds some power to his stolen bases he'll be a bonafide superstar.
Francisco Liriano- I wasn't sure about including him since his only RC card is still not too cheap, but if he can come close to what he was for 1/2 a season before injury, the card could easily double or triple and reports from camp this season have been positive.
I'm sure there are other players. I left out David Wright and Jose Reyes though a return to superstardom for each would likely bring nice increases to their cards. Jake Peavy would also see a nice rebound a with a solid season.
