My Dad is looking to change careers and start up a new woodworking business. (adirondak beach chairs being the main thing, but that's another thread). His latest project has been making MLB themed bar tables tables. The pictures really don't do the tables justice (especially the colored one, the finish makes everything pop and it is absolutely gorgeous in person) since i just snapped a few quick ones with my Iphone.

The Red Sox Logos/Balls/Bat Letterings (basically the entire top of the table)are all cut out individually by a scroll saw so these tables take a good amount of time to make. However, he can put two together at a time because of the way the patterns work. The first two he made were natural wood and wood dyed to the Red Sox colors. The bottom part of the table isn't finished yet, but that's pretty much how its going to look.

My question to you is, which one do you like better? And most importantly, could you see yourself buying something like this? If he decides to make these tables the main focus of his business he could conceivably do any sports team, but he would probably have to invest in a CNC machine to cut down on the time it takes to make them.

They look great !!!

If this intended to be a main focus of business, isn't there going to be issues with MLB Licensing for use of team logos? I only ask since it is going to be a business, and I would assume you would have to advertise what you are offering....

Licensing for all major sports teams will not be cheap.

But if he goes around just selling these at flea markets or home shows or something is anyone even gonna care? How many items at one lone craft fair contain trademarked images and logos? We need Bob

We have looked into college sports teams and it's a $50 fee and you have to send them a sample of your item. As for pro teams, we havent gotten that far. My dad has been wanting to make something like this for awhile, and he just wanted to see what these would look like as a finished product. Since these turned out so well I thought I would post some pictures here to see if this would be somethign people would be interested in.

To be honest, even if the licensing was free, he would have a very hard time making these in mass due to how long it take to make one, even with a CNC machine.

As a woodworker myself, those are some good uses of the wood and the in-lay is great. But I' don't like the Redsox so I wood (yes play on words here) pass. And please don't make a Yankees one either

Ok I'm kidding those look good, but I would not be able to afford one of those anyway

Oh and the licensing fee would not be free. I had a friend that had an idea for something in the lines with MLB and they told him it would be 20k to license using MLB.....for what his idea was and the market was not as strong as he would have liked he passed, but good luck to your dad hopefully it will not be that much to work with the MLB.

Gotta say that is pretty cool. Don't really like the inlaid wood. Why not just paint where the logo's and name go?

Oh I know it wouldn't be free. I was just making a point that even if it was free he probably couldn't mass produe it due to how long it takes to make one.

My Dad's idea was to ask MLB/whatever sports team is on the table if he coud put a table in a charity auction (St. Jude for example) under my Dad's business. People would see the table and ask my Dad personally to make one, thus negatign the need to advertise and pay a king's ransom for licensing.

I like them... I think they're very nice. I'm not a fan of the base (all those bats). I would rather see the tops placed onto a single pedestal.

How much does he think he would sell them for?

As to everyone asking about price, we haven't got that far yet as it's hard to set a price on them since most of the cost to make them is in the labor. Those who are interested in these, what would you feel comfortable paying for one?
