Don't like this at all....... 162 games and you get a one game playoff (which is certainly reasonable to break ties).

Imagine wildcard winner 1 with 99 wins playing wildcard winner 2 with 85 wins. Team 1 is trying to win division and ends up with #4 or #5 starter having to win one game playoff. Team 2 is already locked as 2nd wildcard so shuffles staff so #1 goes in one game playoff. Just stupid.......

Also, "for the 2012 postseason, the five-game Division Series will begin with two home games for lower seeds, followed by home games for the higher seed. After that, it will return to the 2-2-1 format previously used." This is just dumb ::facepalm:: ::facepalm:: ::facepalm::

MLB, what are you doing????

Bravo, well stated. But I can tell you what MLB is doing. They are trying to squeeze that last nickel out of your pocket that they didn't get. Pretty soon they will have 16 teams in the playoffs like the NBA and NFL and the regular season won't mean a doggone thing.

I've said it before, having a 1 game playoff in the MLB is like having a 5:55 Playoff game in the NFL.

Yes definitely about the money...two one game playoffs generate some money for sure. Certainly this gives "hope" to two more teams.

If they want more playoff games, I would make the first round best of 7. I would also scrap the Division Format and go back to AL and NL. Top 4 in each league make the playoffs. Too bad if your team sucks and is completely eliminated by Memorial Day. This will never happen though.....

Easy to say you don't like it when your team usually makes the playoffs.

But hard to like when you realize that both Wild Card winners could have the second and third best overall records in their league.

.....I am a traditionalist and have felt the same way for many years. The more teams that get in, the more unlikely the top seeds hold. This is the case with all sports. Use to have one round of play-offs (the World Series), then two, then three and now four. Might as well let everyone in......

People are so frightened about change. I actually think this is going to be really exciting and it will actually mean something again to win your division. More teams will be trying at the end.

Yes, this is probably, somewhat, about money. But do you not want Major League Baseball to prosper? Do you want the sport you love lose out on potential income that could ultimately make the sport better? What a bunch of haters....

The only problem I have is it hurts the wild card teams in the next round, since they will most use their best pitcher in the playoff.

I would personally expand each league to 16 teams, then have the top 8 teams in each league make the playoffs. With the payroll disparity (and the unlikelihood of that ever changing), it would truly give hope to the hopeless. Get to somewhere around .500 and see if you can get hot. The higher payroll teams will still have a big advantage but it gives the smaller markets hope to have a contender every year instead of a couple years every decade (or fewer if you're a Royals fan like me or any of the other hapless teams out there).

NOT a hater.......two games will not dramatically change the financial landscape of MLB.

I do agree the games will be exciting. One game, winner take all, makes an exciting game as we have seen the last several years. However, baseball is so different than other sports. The starting pitcher dramatically impacts the outcome of any one game (both positive and negative) on a day-to-day basis. The potential match-up that I detailed in my first post really does not determine the best team, but who has the best pitcher lined-up for the one game.

If MLB wants to expand the play-offs at least make the series best of something, not one game.

.

Maybe. But it certainly would the Milwaukee Brewers, the Cincinnati Reds, or other small market teams who struggle year-in-and-year-out to get there. That's tens of millions of dollars to the teams and countless amounts to the cities in tourism, concessions, etc.

Let's look at 2011 for example had this been in play. In the NL, the Cards and Braves would have been in the wildcard single elimination game. The Phillies the #1 overall seed would receive no benefit at all if the Braves won the game and then were forced to play the Diamondbacks who would have also been taking a couple days off and re-shuffling their pitching staff because in the first round you can't play divisional opponents even if the seeding would say you should. To me, that is BS. 1 play 4, 2 play 3. Simple as that.

The majority of teams go many, many years without playoff appearances.

The Wild Card slots were created to make sure his team made the playoffs.

....I don't like the wild-card as I have stated. Sox won free and clear of wild-card in 2007.......

Correct, But lets face it. The wild card came about to make sure the Red Sox and Yankees make the playoffs every year.

So it's better to miss the playoffs all together than make a 1 game playoff?

Makes sense, extra day to play golf.

And they had to make the schedule changes because the schedules were already set before the changes were made. It will return to 2-2-1 next year. Do some reading, less reactionary posting.
