Saw this on ESPN. Apparently Mo would prefer Pedroia over Cano. ESPN has it as their poll question and 61% of the population says Pedroia is better.

http://espn.go.com/new-york/mlb/sto...-pedroia-preferable-second-base-robinson-cano

Seriously? While it is true that Cano does not have the intensity that Pedroia has, the players are not comparable. Maybe the only offensive stat that Pedroia is better at is drawing walks. And while people like to praise Pedroia for his hard work ethic, he pretty much peaked as a 25-27 year old, whereas Cano has continued to improve his game. Pedroia has not had a single season in his career offensively that is comparable to any of Cano's last 4 full seasons. Cano is a far superior hitter, and he's a great defensive player as well (as is Pedroia).

Anyone want to shed some perspective on this for me?

Nothing he said is not true. Who would really question MO on this. The guy played with Cano for almost a decade. Anyone who watched Cano over his Yankee career can agree with Mo on this.

He played with Cano and can attest to his energy level. But the numbers don't lie. Pedroia is not close to the player that Cano is...

edit: And while one can read into what Mo said that hewas talking about who he would rather play with, the ESPN poll simply asks the the better 2nd baseman is. There's no question what the answer is to that.

It's not about stats, Tops. It's about Pedroia's desire to win, to give 110% every time he is on the field. Same can't be said about Cano, as talented as he is...

The rangers had two choices as a player to be named later in the Arod trade. Joaquin Arias and Robinson Cano. Oh how my team could have been different... Cano is far and a way a better player in my mind, but fans aren't in the dugout so it's tough to argue anything said by a player.

also, Cano is still able to get by just by his talent. There will be a time when injuries and age start factoring into his play - I don't know if he wants it or works hard enough to keep playing at a high level once that happens.

I'd take the better player everytime. It's a job not a hobby. Production is production.

Really? So when Pedroia hits a ball to the shortstop with a guy on first base, he has a chance to beat it out because he gives 100% effort every play and hustles down the line. When Cano hits a ball to shortstop with a guy on 1st base, its a double play 99.99% of the time because Cano doesnt give a damn and DOES NOT hustle down the line.

So tell me, which is production?

And despite that Cano has far better numbers...

Cano hustles on double play balls. He doesn't hustle on routine ground balls, which puts him in line with 90% of the league. People act like he is the only person in the league who jogs to first on routine groundouts. Ortiz almost never runs to first for one, and the same can be said for most players. Production is whatever his stats are. .300+ career avg with a good OBP, SLG, and high RBI totals. Add the fact that he is an exemplary defensive 2B. Pedroia is great, but id take Cano every time.

.309/.355/.505 24 HRs 97 RBIs 195 H for a second baseman 162 game average can't really be taught either.

Nothing bad about Pedroia though:
.301/.369/.450 15 HRs 78 RBIs 194 H

Both parks have their hitter friendly attributes. Cano gets a couple extra HRs and Pedroia gets a couple extra HRs and lots of extra hits of the monster. I stand by my choice. Think his jogging is blown astoundingly out of proportion as I said before. 90% of the league jogs on routine outs.

It's not just about a player's production, it's also about leadership and comraderie with teammates.
Pedroia inspires his teammates to do better. His hustle and attitude rub off on them.
Cano's own teammates have criticized him and that's not good for team morale.

Sure stats are important, but so is playing as a team and trusting the players around you.
I'm a Yankees fan, and I'd much rather have Pedroia on my team.

Nope, no question at all, it's Pedroia.

What I take away from this is. A guy like Mo says he would take a guy he played against over the one guy he played with, speaks volumes to me.

As a yankee fan, its not hard to apreciate what a great player pedroia is. Mo hit it right on with that.
