This movie has had a ton of hype over the past year and I never understood why until I watched the trailer. My wife even caught the trailer somewhere and commented on how she found it interesting. My feeling, however, is that once they see it baseball aficionados may be turned off slightly due to its exaggeration of certain facts. That being said, I wonder what elmalo's take on the movie is.

Stop being stupid.

The movie is about baseball, but good movies are rarely ever about the setting and plot. That just provides context for the characters.

I just picture someone sitting around saying, "THE KING OF KONG IS SOOOO STUPID. WHO WANTS TO SEE A MOVIE ABOUT DONKEY KONG!!!?!?!"

Guess what? I could care less about donkey kong, but I absolutely loved the movie.

Movies about plot and premise are almost always idiotic blockbuster movies that are good in their own right, but it's not like they're quintessential movies.

This really bugs me. It almost bugs me as much as people with videos in their signature.

guh.

Really good post. Especially about King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters.

who would go see hoosiers? - probably the best sports movie eva in many folks opinion

what about rudy? - exaggerated like heck but told a great story

it's all about the story; the book is fabulous by Michael Lewis the same guy who wrote the Blind Side - who would have thunk?

a few reasons i'm going to see it

1. I'm a sports movie fan - Hoosiers, Rudy, Field of Dreams, the Blind Side, Invincible, the Hurricane, The Rookie, Remember the Titans - those are all in my DVD collection

2. Michael Lewis is one of my favorite authors because he takes a mundane topic and tells a heckuva story.

3. Great cast - Pitt, Jonah Hill, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Robin Wright, Chris Pratt

I loved king of kong! I went into it not knowing a damn thing about the movie and thoroughly enjoyed it. Girlfriend gave it the thumbs up too!

Secondly, I didn't know Aaron Sorkin was writing the screenplay! I love that guy and the dialogue alone will probably make it worth your time!

Facebook has over 500 million users. It is also a worldwide cultural phenomenon.

Yes, but I was quoting what people said when they first heard they were writing a facebook movie. I remember that movie doing pretty well. That movie really wasn't about facebook. It was about the people involved, which is why it was interesting. It will be the same thing for this movie.

That being said, the rest of baseball has caught up to Beane and this movie is about 10 years too late. I'll still watch it though.

This is probably the selling point of the film. That he did something big enough and different enough that MLB had to catch up with him.
And people who arent diehard basball fans could care less.[/quote]

But, they might. You are right that the average baseball fan doesn't necessarily care. And definitely right on people who aren't baseball fans not caring. But if it's made into a movie, the weird thing is, they will care. In fact, I would almost expect to see more people care because they saw the movie even if they've never been a baseball fan. Movies are weird like that. Sometimes, especially nowdays, people need a medium that can get their attention and movies are it. Because let's face it, people don't like to read. You give them an idea, which is what moneyball really is, and put it in a format that can grab their attention, you will do well. And yes Oakland still sucks but obviously that idea has worked better for other teams. So the idea is somewhat valid but Oakland's execution of it isn't. Hopefully the movie can portray that. If it can, then as with the book moneyball, it will have gotten the point across. The only one that matters.

In my opinion the movie looks really good. It's just too bad the A's never won anything to give it a better ending.
