I think the history of challenge coins really grew from the military and it seems to be a more modern thing. I had never seen or heard of when when I was in the service and I got out in 1993.

Now you see them all over the place, for just about everything.

Todays mail continues a good stretch.

Garvey /5. Garv 5.jpg

Sutton. Sutton.jpg

Moose! A rare Dodgers card to start with AND certified!! Have a few of these now, /100. Skowron.jpg

The autos wrap up with Podres /50. Podres 50.jpg

Last item does have a Dodger link, but is a new Panini GU and with Philly. O'Doul /10. I don't buy many GU cards anymore, but it's fun to pick up an old timer now and again.o'dOUL 10.jpg

Hit a somewhat slow patch, but here are a couple days worth...

Reuss. Reuss.jpg

Kuo, which was a cheap impulse buy. Kuo.jpg

Casparius is a new addition, but he has yet to make the big club. s-l1600.jpg

Added a 3rd Victor G in this set. My average price paid per card has plummeted to where I am happy. Just wish I could have gotten the first one at that average price. s-l1600-1.jpg

Last up is an Oliver /25. Oliver 25.jpg

Sometimes you just toss out a bid and forget it, thinking no chance. That was this item. Was not overly excited about it and bid minimum ($8). I figured for 4 all-star level player autographs, someone would outbid me. It never happened. $3.50 a sig (w/ s/h factored in of course, another $6).s-l1600-1.jpg

I am not super excited about this kind of card, unless it is my only way to get a signature. Since I got his Bowman, this was another don't care if I win and I ended up winning. It's /5. The guy will probably never do anything and I'll have overpaid for it in the end, but who cares. It was cheap for a /5. If he has even a decent career, it may turn out to be a nice deal. ben Casparius. s-l1600.jpg

This was my big hit of the day. These are loud and a bit gaudy, but I like them. I recall the issue when they were new, but it was pricy and I never bought packs. I have collected a few singles along the way, including a different Greg Maddux auto. This one is /10. I feel like it was a bargain coming in under $100, compared to what new, untested or early career players are bringing in today. One of the top pitchers of all-time. Too bad it's a Cub card! This one deserves it's own separate write up. I purchased a lot that consisted of a 1975 Dodgers Yearbook (best YB cover ever) and 2 1977 mail order/souvenir catalog booklets. I really love this type of thing, because it's oddball and was never really meant to be kept per se, but also because it provides valuable information. Looking at the items for sale, costs, etc. The item shipped Dec 15 and then tracking never updated again. After a month, the seller offered me a refund.

I go to my mailbox today and have a media mall package. I didn't recall buying anything that would have qualified for media lately and when I noticed the date on the label, I knew my missing package had finally arrived, 2 months later!

The yearbook had the back cover loose, so this will become a donor item. I'll remove the Garvey page and the cover and place those with the Garvey collection (I have multiple copies). I'll retain the rest of the photos in my "scrapbook" collection and toss the ads. s-l1600-2.jpg

The mail order catalogs were what I really wanted and was disappointed that they were lost, but at least I already had one, so for once my missing item was not causing me great stress! Still, I hated to see these 2 go missing, so was very happy that they finally arrived. That is Reggie Smith on the cover, by the way.

Imagine getting a Vin Scully/Sandy Koufax 45 record (60s vintage), a team issued (60s vintage) 8x10 color photo, an 8x10 team issued team photo (year not specified, but probably 65), a 1965 World Series Yearbook, 1972 Dodgers all-time greats magazine and a Koufax money clip (60s vintage), all for $2! Danny Goodman must have had so much of that stuff that he could hardly give it away! See, it was not always about the money. Collecting was just a thing for passionate baseball fans. Money has ruined it for sure!

I guess i really do this mostly for me, but sometimes i get lazy about it. I got one of these Marichals (bought 2 close together, probably won't mention the 2nd one's arrival). May try to lift a sticker and create a dodger custom, but don't want to ruin the auto either. Anyone have experience with this?

I also got a small stack of 1977 & 80 TCMA Dodger farm club cards highlighted by a Gary Weiss (who only had 1 MLB card, his 81 Fleer. I didn't take the time to move the scans from ebay to my desktop though. sorry to those who might have wanted to see them...

I've never tried to peel off a sticker, but since the background of the auto looks like it is plain white maybe you could make a custom, cut out a hole the size of that auto, and glue it over the original card. It would look better than some of those cut autos where they use a signature on a picture or a card.

A few goodies heading into the weekend...

Garvey Linnett with a vintage signature. Garvey Linnett.jpg

Jack Perconte TCMA, from the same seller who sold me another 6-7 similar cards. He was a Mariner for a couple years, so kind of a dual interest item for me.Perconte.jpg

Vicente Romo 3x5. Romo V.jpg

Got another Bowman Casparius, but not worth showing again.

These showed delivered yesterday, but were in my neighbors mail box!

Finally got the base Gonzalez, after willing the black /199 twice. Gonzalez.jpg

Then this cheap impulse buy Loney /75. I really wish I could find more at places like COMC though. The $4+ s/h on every purchase is starting to annoy me greatly. lONEY 75.jpg

This was a dupe, but never got outbid after thinking I needed it. Getting harder to keep track mentally.Regan Red.jpg

Last up is a Garvey /11. I could not recall if I had one already and didn't want to dig out the box that it would be in. I think there was a bat version also /11, so I bought it just in case. odds are I'll check and this will be my 3rd copy though!! Garvey 11.jpg

I am fairly sure this Verdugo is a dupe. I tried and lost a bunch, so it's possible I never won one before, but I feel like I did and probably not that long ago. The memory is slipping! Luckily, I don't mind dupes when they are affordable copies. Verdugo.jpg

I think this may be my first certified Kevin Correia. The 1X AS spent part of the 2104 season in LA and had a record of 2-4 with 8.03 ERA in his 9 games. Correia.jpg

The big news is a name off the overall list, the first one in a while. Andre Jackson was a late season call up and he appeared in 3 games for LA, losing 1 and getting a save in 11.2 innings. This is both the good and bad of cards/autographs these days. I am totally pumped to see this autograph showing up in Topps products, but then I have to ask, WHY at the same time? I know the answer, and glad he is getting signed cards, but still think the guy hardly warrants to be in a signature issue at this point in his career. Where are the Kenley Jansen autos!!!??? Anyway, drops me down to 4 needs before the season begins and the tally starts rising again! also glad I was able to secure one relatively cheap. I paid around $10 delivered, which is not bad on a new autograph subject. I'd rather snag one for $2 at COMC and might be able to in a year from now. We'll see. Jackson.jpg

Who are your 4 needs?
Well, it's now 3!

Betts, Justin Bruihl and Darien Nunez.

Just added Evan Phillips today. iIt's a postcard and he is shown with the Orioles, but pickings are slim at this time. E Phillips.jpg

I also added this 1/1 of Allen Webster. It still went for just over $20 and i can't explain why I paid that much or really WHY it actually sold for that much. The guy was a dud and never actually played for the team at the MLB level, but he was drafted and was shown on the Dodgers as a prospect in a bunch of early carer issues. I was very close to my max though. Clearly not an investment piece, strictly a fun Dodger piece. Webster 1-1.jpg

For around the same price as Webster, I got this artificially made 1/1 of Grandal as well. Grandal 1-1.jpg

the last featured item really belongs in the Monthly thread, but since I am posting here, why not. I love neat redemption cards. This wasn't the greatest looking, but not the worst. Arod was a huge deal when this came out. Having both the redemption and the prize is always a nice pairing. You can look at these 2 ways. 1). Unredeemed redemption cards may still sit in packs or collections and can't be redeemed for the final product any longer, but they tend to be somewhat scarce since most were redeemed. 2). The redeemed cards are at a set print run, because no others are going to appear out of the blue, where as more redemption cards could. Still, I collect them whenever I can find them and they are reasonably priced. There is a kirk Presley pair from this same set, which I also have. Much less exciting than Arod, but still glad to have the 4 card set now. Someday I may gather up all my redemption cards to see what all I have assembled. Always looking for more, especially if they feature a player's image. Arod 1.jpgArod 2.jpg

I mean it is a 1/1. As a team collector my price point on a card like that of an A's prospect that never made it to the big league team would be right around $25 shipped.

Another good mail day. I'll start it out with a non-auto. I went hard for this, even though I already had at least 1 of them. I was hoping for a bargain, but knew that would not happen. Quad Prime /5. Too bad Garvey is the lamest GU pieces of the batch, but still a great card.

Garv Quad 1.jpgGarv Quad 2.jpg

An Ethier that caught my eye. Ethier 75.jpg

Final piece was a small Billy Cox cut. He is often forgotten among the giants he played with in the 50s, but he was a decent ball player. Slick fielder, not so great bat, but when your line up includes Robinson, Campy, Snider, Reese, Furillo, Hodges and others, everyone can't be a HOFer!! Cox.jpg

Two non-Dodger Dodgers today to start and a non-licensed Dodgers that looks like it isn't...

Oliver /50 and Silver Washington. Oliver 50.jpgWashington Silver.png

VanSlyke. Van Slyke.jpg

I got this a few days back and wasn't going to feature it, but I kind of like the design a bit despite being a non-licensed card. Reese GU /49. Reese.jpg

I then got a sizable package. I have not been buying in quantity from many people and frankly, it sucks. I see shipping commonly now at $5 and more. I think I just paid over $6 on two orders today each. Hate me or agree, but those sellers will be getting 1 star for shipping cost. I factor it in, but that is just ridiculous and they need feedback on their gouging!

Anyway, lots of interesting cheapie Dodger grabs...nothing I needed, but some cool item all the same. I picked the highlights, but there were others I won't mention:

Sherry bros. Sherry.jpg

Rene Valdes. Valdes.jpg

Tommy Dean. Dean.jpg

The former 3 were 8x10, this Fred Claire is a bit larger than a typical postcard. Celebrating the 88 WS win with Tommy boy and the Regans. Claire.jpg

And I realize I'll need a 2nd post to finish it up with a few cards...

It goes to show you how far 1/1s have fallen, at least in my eyes. it was a great concept that they just ran into the ground.

I think since they've been around for 25 years now people don't buy them just because oh wow it's a 1/1, so if it's a player nobody collects it will go pretty cheap. But if multiple people collect the guy, even if it's not a big star they can still go for hundreds of dollars.
