Hi Guys.

On our transaction boards we have had a policy for the past few years that says you must post prices before you can list your cards. There are split viewpoints on this. Where as buyers love it because they have a starting point, sellers hate it for some reason or another. This results in no one listing cards for sale.

What do you think about the rule that says you must post prices when selling cards?

Does it stay or does it go?

I dunno, I posted stuff for sale, and haven't heard anything from anyone,
Don't know if my prices are off or what, but I did include the OBO qualifier. Maybe without prices I'd get some hits? Who knows

I think posting prices should be required. Nobody likes the dreaded, "How much do you want?" "Well how much will you give me?" exchange.

I think the larger issue is that most on here seem to not be interested in paying market on anything.

Keep the rule. Nothing wrong with a seller saying "75 OBO" if they are unsure of a firm price and as you said it gives a starting point.

I do not believe this is a big deal at all regarding the low traffic on the transaction boards. BO has the same rule and if it's not followed the poster has 10 people jumping on them within 30 seconds, yet those transaction boards are booming

It seems reasonable to me that if someone is using the transaction boards to sell their wares, then it should be expected (and in this case required) they list a asking price. If they want to hold a auction, well then... they now have that option here as well.

what about the fact that since the rule was implemented sellers stopped listing cards

Can some sellers chime in on this? You noticed BCA and Phil stopped listing stuff for sale here.

A buyer could end this by making an offer, instead of asking.

Why not try it for a few months, maybe a quarter. Tell people the plan is to test it and go back to the old rule if nothing changes.

Then get a few sellers to list and get feedback from them. Some can/will still list prices, some can choose not too.

Ask both groups if anything changed.

Would say more, but I have to get.

Perhaps another questions could be; dose anyone think that more people will buy and/or sell cards without the need to list a price?

I really do not think so. Sure a few may be more willing to list(READ: test waters for a sucker) but I honestly doubt it will make any 'big picture' difference.

Flip side of the coin: majority of sellers are only interested in selling above market

Card X is currently selling for 20, make an offer and you'll get "well im into it for 40 so I cant move it for less than that."

I dont think theres really a right or wrong answer to this situation, just individual preference.

Just throwing this out there...listing prices work everywhere its used. People didnt stop listing when prices became required., they stopped because the buyers arent here.

Either way, I buy from those who list prices. I dont want to take 4 hours of messages to figure out someone wants 20% above ebay.

I think its only fair a seller list the price of a card he is selling. Why some wont or why they leave you have to ask them.

I find sellers' prices (at least on BO) to be absurd most of the time anyway, so I don't mind prices or no prices

As a buyer I like listed prices.. Gives me either an idea and if I don't agree I can try to negotiate or if I like the price then ill just get it

I don't always know what things are worth or what a fair price is, I haven't been around long enough to know ballpark prices of some cards so without a price sometimes I'm clueless and simply move on

I sell on a few different boards and while the baseball section here is very active I do not think the same can be said about the B/S/T. I make the rounds to see if my thread needs a bump and usually still see my thread here on the first page with no responses, while I have sold on other sites with the same thread. Then when I finally do sell something here, waited 2 weeks for payment.

Prices should always be listed.
When I used to go to big card shows, I'd just skip past the tables without prices listed unless they had something really different.
It's not worth the bother when i could go to another table (or in this case, go to eBay) and find the same cards for a usually cheaper price.
I know the forum isn't the same as a card show, but the principle of selling should be the same.
