Hey everyone,
First of all, when I saw the custom cards that "hofautos" was having made, I really loved the Ty Cobb one. I sort of used that basic design, except not as detailed. Below are the 2 prototypes of the one's I am going to print. I don't have the autographs yet, because I just bought them on ebay a few days ago. Please let me know what you think; all constructive criticism and comments are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Chris

Re: My First attempt at Custom Cut Signatures... Scans inside!

Your font reminds me of House of the Dead.

Other than that, I like the design.

I like the Irvin better

I designed an Irvin custom if you want to use the design.

Heh, now that you say that, it sort of does... Oh well, I like it because it's kind of different.

Thanks

I'm probably going to use my designs for the customs since they'll be PC, but I would be very interested in seeing your desings. Please pm them to me.

Thanks

Yah, they kind of remind me of Halloween in winter time, kind of spooky, especially for deceased guys :? :?

Are those scans the actual size of the cut card that you're going to make? When designing it, make sure to look at it at the exact size you're going to print it out. That helps you judge how the font and type size works in relation to the size of the card.

Here are some basic thoughts/concerns...

- You cannot design a card without knowing the actual 100% size of the autograph and how it will work within a card.
- Know your final output size. A standard card is 3.5" x 2.5" and judging by your mock-up, the "AUTHENTIC CUT SIGNATURE" font will be a completely illegible, 2pts or less.
- Start with a basic, functional sized template and then design/build.

Now, once the card is designed...that's just the beginning of the process. Before you put a speck of adhesive on the actual autograph, build a few dummy cards just to get it down.

Thanks for the thoughts. These were just pretty basic mock-ups. I plan on tweaking them once I get the autos in, but just wanted to get something to start with. And thanks for the idea with the dummy cards, I will definitly do that.

Re: My First attempt at Custom Cut Signatures... Scans inside!

Two things stick out immediately to me:

1) The cut window looks way too small for an average sized cut. Obviously there's no way to tell how large the autograph will be until you receive the piece, but assuming it is average size, it may not fit well with your design, especially in the second one.

2) The design is very busy. I would want the autograph to be the focus of the piece. With the various stats, graphics, and atypical font, it really draws my eye away from the cut itself.

Good luck, and make sure you show off the finished product.

Thanks to everyone for the replies. I got the checks in, and sized up the auto box so it would fit how I want it. I changed a few things with the cards, and also made a back for the Leon Day.

Leon Day: (Changed the font of his name and the auto window, but nothing else. I kind of like that scary font at the top)
LeonDay-1.jpg

Leon Day back: (I like the summary to be the main focus, since he isn't such a well known player)

Monte Irvin: (Added a Separate pic of him on the side and faded the side of the background pic, also changed the auto window):

Any other suggestions/tips/constructive criticism is always appreciated!

Thanks,
Chris

P.S. The seller also threw in a couple extra checks that I will eventually turn into custom cuts, I'm going to make a seperate post to show those off.

I gotta be honest here man, the letters with the players names look terrible. Too busy and look cheap.

That "Halloween" type font looks really really bad.

Sorry. I like the layouts and the pictures look really nice but you really gotta fix the fonts and lose the white/blue "sprinkled" letters of the players.

Your cards tho, just MHO

I'm going to continue this thought with...if you are going for "distressed" and aged fonts styles, make the entire card have a similar distressed feel.

Basically, there is a little logic or transition between the extreme distress on the drippy (creepy) fonts and the rest of the card. Perhaps throw a texture across the card to see something tie in the font choice.

Personally for me, I'd change the fonts altogether as they don't seem to relate directly to the card and do indeed evoke more "Halloween" emotions than vintage.
