Let me know how you think it is. Since I don't know much about Photoshop, yet, I kept it simple. On the Left is Jesus Montero and on the right is Austin Jackson. The background is black with small puzzle pieces (it was a filter effect).
I wanted to know how you thought it was, and what I should do in the future to improve.

Thanks,
JG

Re: My first banner attempt.

Ok 1st attempt. In the future, I would make banners that are shorter and don't have that much head room. If you want to not chop off part of the players, you will want to use the autoselect along with the eraser tool. Hope this helps!

It looks nice, but I think a lighter background would like nice and make the players stand out more.

Right now, the cap of Ajax is getting lost in the background.

Re: My first banner attempt.

Thanks for your fast responses guys!
Zambrano-How do I do that? Are you saying I autoselect the players and move them up to get rid of the huge void on top. I guess it's like TV's rule of thirds. You want to have the person's head who you are filming in the upper third of the screen, just like you want to have the person's head in the upper part of the banner.

Tonsofcommons-I totally see what you are saying. Maybe next time I'll try a lighter color.

Re: My first banner attempt.

If you want to get rid of the black on top, you can just crop it. For autoselect, I was talking about cutting the players from their original backgrounds. You can use autoselect and then cut the part that you selected from the background, but most of the time it is not perfect so you will need to use the eraser tool also. Let me know if you have any more questions. Thanks

Re: My first banner attempt.

Love it, but I would crop out the top as some have mentioned.

Zambrano- Is that easier than the filter-->extract?

JG

By the way, I updated it with the cropped version. Better?

Much better! Love the white letters on the black background.

Personally, I think it's easiest to use the quick selection tool and the eraser, but both should work.

i use the magnetic lasso, clean up the selection (because the tool is not perfect), select inverse, then feather a few pixels so I don't get super hard edges. Then I just hit delete on the layer I have selected.

Thanks for the tip. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that is the lasso that you draw around the figure and it cuts as close to the figure as possible?

I find it easier to use the magic wand to crop the people out of the original picture.
