Yesterday was my greatest mailday ever! I checked the USPS tracking info on the Justin Duchscherer card lot I was expecting, and I found out it was arriving a day early. I felt like a little kid on Christmas morning! I got home and there was the beautiful, golden bubble mailer just waiting to be opened.

This lot was extra special, too, because it came courtesy of ... Justin Duchscherer's father! I happened to come across an old eBay sale from 2008 and I contacted the buyer with a total shot-in-the-dark question asking if he still had the card. The buyer replied that he had multiple copies of the card because ... it was Justin Duchscherer's father! We have been emailing back and forth a bit, and I came to find out that he had a bunch of older cards of Justin. As you can see from the scans of the cards he sent me (following this intro), there are a lot of older cards, a lot of beautiful color in the cards, and a lot of super short prints that probably would never have surfaced again. I can't thank him enough for sending me so many amazing cards for my collection of his son.

I don't think today's mailday will ever be topped. I don't know how many collectors come into contact with a family member of the player they collect, but it was an incredible experience for me and it was a pleasure conversing with Justin Duchscherer's father. He actually told me that he had all 5 of the 2002 Donruss Chicago Collection #158 RR /5! Obviously, if I had never contacted him, I would never have picked up one of those. It was awesome of him to give up some of his collection to assist me with mine.

Not only was the haul incredible, but it also put me at 203/221 non-1/1s for my Justin Duchscherer collection. That comes out to 91.86% of all non-1/1 cards of Justin. Crazy. Plus, there is another card ending on eBay shortly that I plan on winning. Once that card arrives, I will be down to a mere 17 cards left on my hit list! Who knows when/if they will show up, but the chase has led to some pretty amazing events and connections in my life. Enjoy the scans and thanks for looking!

I lived in Lubbock, Texas in the '90s when he was the star pitcher at Coronado High School.
I was just starting out as a TV news producer at a local station, and we ran tons of stories about him leading up to the draft.
It's cool he turned out to be a Major League All Star.

Awesome stuff, Mike. I bet a lot of player collectors got a boner reading your story about getting a bunch of hard-to-get PC stuff directly from the players dad.

Fixed it for you ... ha!. Awesome backstory! You won't find many right-handers who don't throw 90 mph making multiple all-star teams these days.

Thanks, Erik. It was a pretty cool experience and the cards mean that much more to me. Who knows? Maybe my wife will allow me to share my story with the (allegedly) hot, card-collecting girl down the road from you. Hopefully, she's a player collector because my story will give her a boner ... wait ... :o

That was really nice of his father to sell you those hard-to-find cards. Does he have injury issues? It seems like a guy with a career 3.13 ERA would at least get a minor league contract for spring training.

my favorites the red auto :D Good stuff!

I think it is my favorite, too. That is the card I was looking for when I found out its owner was Justin's father!

Unfortunately, Duchscherer has thrown less than 30 innings over the last 3 years. He missed all of '09 and '11 with hip and back injuries. Not a very good sign for a pitcher. I'm hoping he'll sign a minor league deal with a team shortly. I want one more new card of him produced, even if it is just a 2012 Topps Series 2 or Update release.
