My Mickey Mantle collection

Kind of a cool reprint of the '52 Mantle was put out by T.S. O'Connell.

"T.S. O'Connell first started the 8x10 series in 1984 and continued expanding it throught the 80s. When I last corresponded with him in 1991, the checklist for the 8x10s had grown to 129 different.

Each watercolor portrait is hand-numbered to 500. After creating the black & white drawing for a player, he printed out copies. Then when you ordered the portraits he would hand paint them and send them through the mail. As part of his agreement with taking his magazine editing position, he agreed to no longer sell any of his products since they were unlicensed. Subsequently, I believe there are alot less than 500 copies available in the hobby of each portrait."

tpeichel - that's definitely something out of the ordinary. The Gooden looks nice.

I also forgot to give Greg Cleveland his props earlier. Yesterday I received a free package of around 30-40 Mantles, many of which I needed. I'll work on listing them out/scans Sunday on my day off. Thank you very much Greg!

This reprint came in today - 1996 Topps Mantle Collection #11 ('61 Topps). Let's look at them side-by-side:

A boat load of Mantles came in from JoshHamilton Tuesday; I'm guessing around 40. I'm fairly certain I needed all but four or five. I was excited to see a few refractors and more reprints from the 1996-1997 Topps Mantle Collection set. I had no clue the set extended into 1997 until JH's package had a few of them.

I will work on updating the list today.

I know! The really overdid themselves with the HRH and Mantle Story cards, but other than that it's not too bad.

Another 1952 reprint came in today.

Around a month ago my mother ordered a 3-card blue refractor set from QVC (you can find decent things there every once in a while). Based on a Beckett search these seem to be the refractors that were inserted one per set in 2008 Topps Factory sets. The set I received consisted of '52, '53', and '54 blue refractors. Working on scans now. Although the '52 is horribly OC, the cards look great.

As of now, using an early 2011 Beckett magazine and estimating (on the low end) a few cards, the total book value of my Mantle collection is approximately $582. Taking out Mantle Story cards and HRH cards it would probably be around $530-540.

The highest-booking card in the collection is the 2007 Topps Mickey Mantle "GU" (probably clothing) which came with Target factory sets, which books $40.
