Probably - I love the word and try to use it as much as I can. I can't say the "spirit of the times" of the show?

I would love to see data for average age at the National over the years. When I first started going in the early/mid 80s, there were a lot of similarly aged kids in the crowd. The last four that I have been to, I've seen those similarly aged kids grown up...like myself.

It's a shame, with no end in sight, that the hobby has shifted away from the youth that created it. Those of us who still collect often go back into our childhood memories to keep the hobby alive, where will those memories be in 30 years? Current kids going to a Playstation Convention where they can play with retro games?

It seems like everything i've read about nats has been 'great to hang w/buds' rather than 'wow, found some amazing steals' or 'wow, set up as a dealer + it was fantastic sales wise.' just b/c there's a lot of foot traffic doesn't mean dealers made a ton of cash. i'm wondering if anyone on fcb (besides jvc/randy) set up as a dealer + if so, how it compared to past nats?

Yep. There were definitely alot of kids there but unless the hobby figures out how to get nicer cards in their hands, this hobby will continue to die. Many times when i've been dumb enough to open wax, I try to give away those cards to the children of people I know. Cant tell you how many times they've just sat and stared at even a common GU card. Hopefully someone can figure it out...

Good write-up, I've enjoyed all the recaps I've read from everyone. I went Thursday and Sunday, my first national, I loved it, so much to see.

Regarding kids, I noticed quite few with their dads, did not take my 9-year old son, he's not into cards much. Plus, I know he would be hounding me to leave after about 2 hours. The NFL Players Association had former Colt and Ravens broadcaster Stan White signing for free on Sunday for kids. I think a kids morning would be great, have free cards and giveaways for the kids and get a few players from the teams in town to appear and sign for free for the kids (and only the kids), perfect opportunity for Topps to giveaway some base Topps and Topps Attax.

I half way agree with Jeff. Should be focused on what was there (graders, exhibits, etc.) and about the lines at the Nationals... what were they lining up for? Who had the longest lines, etc. That would give an indication of what's hot and popular.

Great article, Wes. You could also have written a whole piece on the cards that were displayed or what wax products were hot, but the "zeitgeist" of the show was a great angle and worthy of its own article. Thanks for giving some of us who weren't able to make it out there a glimpse into the show!
