Prospect has:

2005 sterling auto/patch
2005 topps chrome auto
2005 bowman chrome
2006 bowman chrome auto

For example is the auto bowman more popular since it is an auto yet not a true rookie card like 2005? Is a topps chrome superior to the sterling? would you rather have a sterling auto refractor or a blue or gold chrome 05? Rather a black topps chrome auto /200 or a blue chrome or blue chrome auto?

Just need some advice. Thank you.

IMO 2005 TC is the best one from the list.

Was the player in question also on the 40-man roster in 2005 like Melky? If so the 2005 is really a RC IMO and not really an FY.

 yes. Any thoughts? I thought sterling at first, but he doesn't have any non-patch cards so the Topps Chrome would be his best?

Personally this is the way I would rate them.
2005 sterling auto/patch 3
2005 topps chrome auto 1
2005 bowman chrome draft 2
2006 bowman chrome auto 4

Why is sterling so low if I can ask? Is it because there isn't a base card and a patch card that the patch isn't considered a true rookie card?

I am just a big fan of the auto with a GU. You could probably change it with the 05 bowman chrome, but I prefer Chrome and would rather pick up some blues or golds

Ok, that's a fair point of view.

Where do 'buyback' autos fall into the mix......He has a heritage rookie card #/28 for example and a bowman #/839?

In terms of what will fetch the most $-

06 bc- gold + up. Red ref au /5 is going to beat anything short of a superfractor value wise
05 topps chrome au (rare- black)
05 sterling au rare (ref)
05 topps chrome/sterling au (base)

Sterling almost always sells for less than chrome- see ryan braun, Philip humber, jeff niemann, and chase headley for exs. 05 tc aus, outside of jay bruce, don't get much love

You would take an '06 BC gold over a '05 TC xfractor? I'd still take the x over an '06 red or super.

Id take an 06 bc red ref au #/5 out of an 06 tc red /65. tc, while i like the product, doesn't generally seem to get a lot of love. imagine if bruce had an 06 bc red ref au /5. don't you think that would fetch more than an 06 tc /65?

You mean 2005, right? I would think his first year would be the more popular one unless it was less than 25.

Next question: Nate Schierholtz .....his 2007 sterling sticker auto is selling higher than his 2005 bowman on-card auto....is there a reason ?

The TC update set had x's #/65 but the base set had #/25. I'd still prefer the #/65 partially because I prefer TC and partially because its older.

Your post also compares 06 TC instead of 05. But I'd personally prefer the TC over Bowman in your example.

Meant 05; made a typo. Chrome’s my fav product, so I’d prefer the guy’s 1st bc au. Plus, bruce is the only guy from 05 tc where it’s outsold bc, + that’s b/c he didn’t have an 06 bc au or an 05 bc au. Not the case w/braun, headley, bell, etc., so I still think bc (esp. the red ref au /5 or a super) would hold more value than say a tc au.

Melky TC has outsold BC as well, but I can't say whether this is because of the auto or not. But as I'm not a prospector I greatly prefer Topps/TC to begin with.
