Need Opinions! 1st Xmas Style....

First of all I'm sure some or all of us growing up were given Topps Factory sets as Christmas gifts every year. What an exciting gift it was and you knew it was coming every year. And we all know that those sets were worth alot more then than what they are now!!

So my question to everyone is..... My wife and I gave birth to our first child a boy in September, and this being his first Christmas, I also want to do something for him every year for when he is older!

Now what do I get him?? Do I stick with the Factory sets?? A certain wax box?? Singles, or anything else???? What is everyone's opinions or does anyone else do this and have a great idea?? Any ideas appreciated.......

I'd only consider value if you're hoping your son would sell it some day. With that said, the Topps Christmas set is the best guaranteed value for that particular price point anyway.

Rookie cards or autographs of the two MVP winners and Cy Young winners each year. Nice piece of history to look back year by year, and also a way to get some nice cards of the best players in the game each year.

Buy him a set of Topps Heritage every year. Eventually you will see cards that have the same look as the ones you got. I started doing Topps Heritage for my boys, but switched to Allen Ginters. When they are old enough, I want to take them to Spring Training and we can get some signed IP. A&Gs look fantastic signed!

I think that rather than purchase factory sets or complete sets, you purchase 2-3 wax boxes of a Topps product (keeping with tradition), and when they are old enough let them open them and put the sets together.

I think this would be more fun than having some factory sets sitting around.

I would recommend a commemorative silver dollar each year at Christmas. Its a one troy ounce coin and shouldn't be too much. Additionally, you could start picking up omlb's signed by superstars or hofers from recent past. Nolan Ryan, Tony Gwynn, Cal Ripken, and Brett are some of the names that come to mind for this project. It won't break the bank each year and would be a nice addition that will hold its value.

Maybe pick up 2 or 3 really good HOF player autograph cards each year. Start with the older players first. By the time he is 18, he will have a nice collection!

Go with a wax box. Factory sets have become trite and are a dime a dozen.

Just get him this and then when he turns 18 and needs to go to college he can flip it for a free
ride to the local community college

i think i know what i'm gonna do for my boy!! took a little bit from everybody! i'm gonna get him Auto balls from that years HOF inducties!!Shouldn't be too expensive of a tradition but one that has alot of history!!!! with that being said anyone know where i can get a nice ricky and rice auto ball :lol:

Great idea, I would personally go this route over the Topps Sets. These will hold more value over time, but it may end up costing you more than $40 a year.

yea prob, hopefully less then 100 a year but in long run way more worth it then sets! plus i get to show them off till he gets older

If you decide to go the wax box route look for a set that will likely last the test of time (like topps base, bowman or a&g).

If you decide on a set, buy 1 of them for christmas and buy 1 to stash away. Take the box that you are stashing away and attach a $10 or $20 bill from that year on the box.

When he turns 30 or 40 give them the stash. This could be more worthwhile now since products are much more limited and a box of 2010 ginter in 30 years will be worth alot more than a box of 1990 topps. If your son decides not to get into the hobby, they will be able to resell all of the boxes and still have a hell of a christmas with the $10 * 30 or $20 * 30. If they do get into the hobby, they will have clean sealed boxes from everyday of their lives and would be an awesome show piece.

Of course this only works if you can keep yourself from busting the stash

On the other hand though, if you would just like the thrill and bonding, I cant imagine anything better than opening up twenty years worth of basic Topps because by then, todays stars will be "old timers" and you both look back and say "Wow, look at Pujols in 2009, he's so young and only had 300 hrs."

bowman would work as well. The rookies today would be retired by then and you could see what everyone thought they should be when they were a rookie and how they truly turned out.
