He is a 3rd basemen first round pick in 2004 maybe? He is going to be good imo. Only 24 years old.

Laroche and Alvarez ahead of him?
Laroche not really holding the position for sure. Alvarez isn't in the bigs yet. Walker could move to the outfield he is very athletic.

Good to see him get the first one out of the way, especially in front of the hometown crowd packed with family and friends.

However, if he has any chance at sticking at the major league level, it will be as a utility player. Beyond one hot month, Walker has shown very little in his two years at AAA. Third belongs to Alvarez by next All-Star break, unless he shows he can't handle the position.

I think that Pedro would be a better fit, but I do think it's significant that management insists both that he can remain at third, and that his bat is close to being MLB ready. They may be willing to sacrifice some defense at third to keep his bat at a premium position (ie Aramis Ramirez). I would also think that a position switch, even as early as this spring, would push back his ETA in Pittsburgh.

I have his signed rookie card but it is a weird number like 1313 or something. Also I have a signed ball I met him and he is a really nice guy.

The Riverlands.
They would most likely move Walker to first before Alvarez. Wasn't Walker a catcher? Usually catchers make a smooth transition to first base.

There are a few reasons why Walker would be highly unlikely to move to first as a primary position. First off, his defense is much better than Alvarez's. The way things play out with the Alvarez/LaRoche/Walker love triangle are entirely dependent upon one thing: Can Pedro stay at third at the major league level. If he can't handle the position, or outgrows it, then first is his, and LaRoche, Walker, or whoever else they have for the position will battle for the starting job. If he stays put, then LaRoche and Walker will need to learn new positions, or hope for a trade.

Despite being a converted catcher, Walker runs relatively well, and has a good deal of athleticism. As I've said before, I could see him getting time at the corner outfield spots, 2B, and possibly even some time at catcher to groom him for a role as a super-sub, unless his plate discipline makes drastic improvements.
