I love a lot of these guys including Tiant, a real lot!! However, I do not see any of them getting in. I know Kaat and Tiant compare favorably to Catfish Hunter but he had many World Series wins.

Boyer rates very highly as a power hitting and defensive third-baseman.

Oliva was a great hitter who had injuries that forced him to miss many games.

What do you all think of anyone's chance of being elected?

From a Dodgers fan prospective: as much as I'd love to see guys like Hodges and Wills get in, if they haven't made it by now then they honestly don't belong in the HOF. You either have the career stats/accomplishments to get in during your first 10-odd years of eligibility or you don't. The only guys that should get in after that long of a wait are Rose and Shoeless Joe, followed by the steroid superstars.

Tony Oliva is a curious case. Injuries clearly derailed his career, but when he was healthy, he was excellent. Part of this might be some bias because I'm a Twins fan, and have met Tony Oliva a couple of times now. He's lived in the United States ever since signing with the Twins, but you still can't understand half the words he says  I was around 12 the first time I met him. The Twins Caravan was going through Pierre, SD, where I lived at the time, and even though I missed school because I was sick, I still talked my mom into going. I had started getting a glove signed (horrible decision, most are faded or starting to fade) at my first Twins game ever, and Bert was signing before the game. I had nothing else and was just getting into baseball, but wasn't collecting. Anyways, I continued to get the glove signed when he caravan rolled through every couple of years. I gave it to Tony, and he put it on, started talking about how great of a glove it was, but said I needed to break it in. I sat there in awe as he played with the glove, working it as if he were breaking it in. This went on for 3-5 minutes, and the whole time he was being told that he had to hurry it along. He told the lady that was working to give him some time since he was busy. From that day on I've been a huge supporter of Oliva. I understand hat his career numbers don't quite put him into the HOF, but looking back, I really wonder what could have been if it were not for all of the knee surgeries. He was ROY, 8x All-Star, and 3x Batting Champ. All of which was done in his first 8 full seasons. I don't count his first 2 seasons, he played in 9 and 7 games respectively. Take those two 'seasons' out, and that leaves him with a 13 year career with the last third of it being injury riddled. Its unlikely he will get it, but I'm pulling for him to make it. Its been awhile, but there werea few articles that I read that regarded him as one of the top players ELIGIBLE for the the HOF that isn't in

Jim Kaat's stats make him very deserving of being in the Hall of Fame. Played 25 seasons, 16 time Gold Glove winner and one of the top hitting pitchers of his era to go with three 20 game winning seasons and a total of 283 career wins. What more do you need?

My gut tells me Gil Hodges is due, but Jim Kaat was the closest (missed by two votes) in 2011.

Ozzie Smith? I don't know.

Bigger questions, is this different than the vet committee?

According to Phil Niekro and Don Sutton, the answer to your question is 17 more wins.

The only one I'd even consider is Jim Kaat, only because of his incredible 16 Gold Gloves, and he was a 20-game winner three times.

But as others have said, if they're weren't voted in during their 15 years of eligibility, or all of the veteran's committee elections, why are they worthy now?

Next opportunity for Belle will be under the Expansion Era Committee. "The Expansion Era Committee will next meet in the fall of 2016 for consideration of candidates for the Class of 2017."

Cool. Thanks for the details. I am not holding out hope but I think he is a perfect example of someone who would benefit from the committee after this much time given he didn't even get a fair shake at a HOF shot given the writers, etc. after his career.
