Knowing the Rockies, my crystal ball predicts what they get in return. . .

First Matt Holliday, now Nolan Arenado. Enjoy, Saint Louis.

And yes, Rockies will get nothing. Absolutely f*cking nothing in return. Because that's what we do.

Oh yeah. How could I forget that one?

I just looked it up, and at the time of the trade Larry Walker, yes HOF'er Larry Walker, had a 1.093 OPS. In return the Rockies got Jason Burch, Luis Martinez, and Chris Narveson. Sure it was a salary dump, and I get that to a point. But on the other hand...

Of course, you might ask which Luis Martinez was that? Was it the catcher with a career -0.3 WAR, or the pitcher with a career -0.6 WAR? Well, I really don't know. And frankly, I could not be bothered to research further to figure out which one it was.

But I am happy for Arenado. He is competitive as hell and wants to win more than anything else. So going to STL is good for him. They may not with the WS next year, or ever during the rest of his playing career, but they sure as hell will try. Unlike some teams I can think of.

Hey now when the Rockies traded Holliday they did get Carlos Gonzalez, who was pretty good for a few years.

It was the A's that got jack squat when they traded him to the Cardinals after a half season.

Sounding like Austin Gomber, Luken Baker, Jhon Torres, and one of Jake Woodford or Angel Rondon plus the Rockies sending $50 million to the Cardinals.

I am seeing reports that the full trade is:

Cardinals get:
-Nolan Arenado

Rockies get:
-the privilege to send STL 50mil
-the rights to be the away team during STL/ROX games at Coors next year
-the promise that Arenado goes into the HOF as a Cardinal
-Matt Wieters

Anybody else look at sold items after the breaking news? Last night a 2013 Topps Chrome Pink ref. auto /5 PSA 10 sold for $9,000.

I have a raw black ref. auto /100 that I bought a couple of years ago that I am conflicted on; grade, hold, sale?

Regardless, congratulations to the Cardinal fans. It will be fun to see what he can do with that team.

I'm so confused by this deal....so essentially the Rockies are paying $50m for those handful of prospects? None are even highly rated as far as I can see. Hmm..

I mean good deal for the Cardinals, that's a massive addition to their lineup!

They're also freeing up $150 million in payroll. It sounds like Arenado is getting an additional optout after the 2022 season as well and possibly a 7th year added on. Lots of moving pieces. Considering it is still a deal for 1 guaranteed year of Arenado the low prospect cost isn't surprising. Torres is a pretty good prospect and Gomber and Woodford aren't anything to sneeze at even if they aren't "impact" type players.

Oh okay I didn't know about the opt out, I still think a deal could have been made with another team without sending money with him

Not likely. That contract was at least $50 million underwater (some estimators had it at $70+ under) and with the pandemic causing revenue uncertainty anyone that traded for him would have wanted the amount paid down. It was either going to be taking back bad contracts or sending money with him.

It’s official...

The Rockies will receive left-hander Austin Gomber, third baseman Mateo Gil, infielder Elehuris Montero and right-hander Tony Locey in exchange for Arenado.

The Rockies got fleeced. I’d be seriously upset if I were a Rox fan. I’m a Cardinals fan, but I won’t poke fun at them though, it has to suck to be them right now, but I thank the Rockies for the absolute gift.

That's no lie. Who the hell are these guys? I really didn't know. I'm no prospector, and I don't have my finger on the pulse of up-and-coming players. But seriously, let's see who my team got for a perennial MVP candidate...

Austin Gomber: 27 years old, 104 IP in the majors, 7-3 with 3.72 ERA and 1.41 WHIP. Respectable, but.
Mateo Gil: 20 years old, 2 seasons in the minors. 257/.327/.373 slash and can't steal a base. Pass.
Elehuris Montero: 22 years old, 6'-3" third baseman. Hmm! But alas, little power (32 HR in 1519 minor league PA) and .751 total OPS.
Tony Locey: Only 22 with 17 IP in minors. Not a good 17 IP but way too soon to tell. Still...

That is the most Rockies trade in Rockies history. No wonder they have never won their division in 26 years and counting.
