I think that this became a bigger deal than it needed to be. Freeman and McCann got involved in a personal feud between Maholm and Gomez. By getting Gomez ejected, Maholm didn't get to pay back Gomez with an inside pitch his next AB. At the end of the day, McCann and Freeman let Gomez take them out of the game because at the end of the day, the Brewers won a meaningless game for them but the Braves lost an important game for home field advantage.

Benches clear during Milwaukee Brewers-Atlanta Braves game - ESPN

"It's a tough game and unfortunately I got kicked out in the first inning for doing nothing," Freeman said. "It's a little frustrating."

However, Dana DeMuth, the third base umpire and crew chief, said he didn't hesitate to eject the first baseman.
"Right when he came in, he went boom with an elbow, which we saw, and it caught the third baseman, (Aramis) Ramirez," DeMuth said. "That right there is just like throwing a punch. That is overaggressive. That, No. 1, calls for an ejection. What we saw out there was the same as we saw (on video). There was nobody else that was overly aggressive other than Gomez, of course."

To me the best part of the whole thing was the swing BEFORE he launched the next one 1,000ft. My man pretty much came out of his shoes swinging at the pitch.....made Adrian Beltre look like a slap-hitter.

If you watch the video, does anyone else think this quote totally misses the fact that Reed Johnson came running in hard right at Gomez, and that Gomez was responding to Johnson? I still don't agree that Gomez should have been ejected. Like lisu, this seemed like it was between Gomez and Maholm, until other people decided it wasn't. I don't think Maholm did anything wrong in this instance here either. If he's the one that told Gomez to "run", then so what.

Also, lets be clear that the benches would NEVER have cleared is McCann had stayed off the basepath.

I agree. I think McCann and Johnson were the biggest culprits. I'm not a braves or brewers fan...just being objective. This whole incident would have ended when gomez crossed the plate if mccann wasn't in his way and Reed Johnson never started hitting people.

Gomez was suspended from last night's game and he accepted it without argument. Reed Johnson was also given a suspension, but he's appealing. Seems after closer inspection, MLB saw what Johnson did.

Also, those 2 plus McCann and Freeman were all fined.
