March 11:
I have been scouring the internet and have found some really old pictures of the building we designed a room for in the contest. I thought those involved might like to see the outside in addition to the inside that they have already seen.

March 6 - Original Post:
This will not be your typical contest and I think it might be a fun exercise. Winner will have to earn it and I might get some good ideas out of the deal too!

As a lot of you know I'm an attorney in east TN. Without giving away any specific and boring details I'll more than likely be moving into another office shortly. Where the CONTEST aspect comes in is I need some help designing the office floor plan.

My wife and I spent some time last night laying out floor plans and such and I thought it might be a fun way to give away cards by letting others help me design and give their input. I know this might sound silly, but it just gives the contest a fun twist, you have to design a floor plan and my wife and I will judge which one fits the best with what we like and need.

Sounds easy enough, right?

Office details:
The space is in the third floor of a historic bank building on the corner of two of the main streets in the downtown area. The elevator opens into a lobby on the third floor with the office right in front of it. The room is approximately 37' long x 23' wide with windows all along the outside wall. The ceiling is very high, probably at least 12 feet. All duct work and piping will show, a very urban and industrial look. If you want to check out the website of the group, they have some really amazing work: http://www.urbansynergy.net

What I need:
Waiting room, front desk/secretary area, at least 2 offices (maybe one large enough to work as a small conference room or maybe one office and a conference room). You can add storage room if you like. There are two support beams running from the floor to the ceiling and one is near the door so it has to be planned around somehow.

There will be 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes (more possibly) and they will be a "pick your own card" prize from this folder (multiples choices depending on placing):

PRIZES - I will probably add more cards to the "pick your own card" folder as we go!

BE CREATIVE AND LETS HAVE SOME FUN WITH THIS...... this is really just a fun way for me to give some stuff away so there's no need to get too serious.

Thanks!
Casey

Sorry the pic isn't on graph paper and please ask if you have any questions about measurements:

I though the title was going to be describing perhaps your new paralegal.

I might be able to come up with something. I had to do many things like this in my business class when we had to do projects where we had to start up a business for class.

Very cool.... I'm looking forward to seeing them.

Maybe when this is all said and done, I'll post the 12 or so drawings we did last night.

Is the 5.5' line a wall?
Sorry, I see that the line is a little misleading now that I look at it. The 5.5' is the distance from the wall the the beam. The room is totally open besides the two beams and HVAC.

Don't forget, half walls can be utilized for a reception area.... we went half wall crazy last night, lol.

Thanks,
Casey

Thats a good exercise to have under your belt.... you never know when you'll be faced with designing your own office out of the blue like me, lol.

No prob at all. I'll let this run for a little while, so there's plenty of time.

A few details I left out that might have an affect on any designs - The ceiling is very high, probably at least 12 feet. All duct work and piping will show, a very urban and industrial look. If you want to check out the website of the group, they have some really amazing work: www.urbansynergy.net

Thanks again!

This is just a very crude first draft. I'll of course go through and figure out the exact measurements and whatnot (and make a cleaner design). But is this basically what you were asking for? And are hallways alright to have?

Yeah, thats great. I like the idea of storage space around the HVAC and the nice sized waiting room. That first support beam right when you walk in the door makes it almost absolutely necessary to put a wall along it somehow. I did a design last night that had the waiting room around it and it was kind of awkward there in the middle of the room. Only thing I need in your pic is a secretary area and its good to go!

Thanks for the input!

Would you be interested in a hang grid ceiling?I am sorry but I am just not into the whole urban/industrial look.Besides...a drop grid ceiling is not all that expensive if you check around.

I know what you mean, I felt the same way when I first found out.... but after seeing a few of their locations and how they make it look, I think the nice high ceilings will turn out alright.

The ceiling in the building I am in now once had a beautiful tin tiled ceiling (I don't know exactly how to describe it, but its an old building and that was one of the styles to use 2' x 2' square tins). They covered it up with a regular ceiling when renovations were made about 20-25 yrs ago and they regretted it ever since. I know this is different, but I think the high ceilings make it feel like each space is so much larger than a typical 8' ceiling. Thanks for the input though, I appreciate all the ideas to consider. The more minds I have helping the better it will turn out!

No problem, thank you! Very nice design!

I love the sports mem room!!! Thats fantastic.

Very nice reception area as well. And I'm glad you brought it up b/c I had forgotten to mention it, but there is a community bathroom right outside the office that is shared with the other office on the third floor (insurance company).

Thanks for the design and great ideas!
