The seller is the artist I think...his eBay story is called Henderson Art Gallery.


These weren't packed out, just the extras. He probably sent the "mint" sketches to Topps and kept the deconstructed ones to sale privately.

If the artist is selling it himself, it is an "artist return card". The way that works is that each artist is given a number like 106 or 56 cards from Topps. They draw a certain number like 100 or 50 for the set and are given like 6 blanks to draw whatever they would like to sell themselves. This is done because most sketch artists get paid VERY little (only a few bucks per card) for ones packed in boxes. They make their money from the returns (they are called returns because they have to be sent to Topps first to be approved).
I have a number of returns from various sets. The quality is 99% of the time MUCH better than the pack inserted ones but also much more expensive.
