I feel bad for the pitcher that The O's take (If they take a pitcher).

Yeah, Britton, Matusz and Arrieta are hating life being the aces of the club. ::facepalm::
O's have a very bright future.

To answer Jeff's question, I think Cole's cards will do quite well, even though he'll be in Pittsburgh's system. It didn't seem to hurt Taillon's values any.

I think so too, if the steelers are any evidence a winning team in Pittsburgh = BIG money for the stars of the teams.

As much as I'd love for Bubba to stay in KC, I'd love it even more for my EBAY auctions if he went to Chicago.

Sleeper Alert: Onelki Garcia Speck

Posted Jun. 6, 2011 3:06 pm by Conor Glassey
Filed under: Draft Day, Draft Dope

It's not often a player emerges as a pop-up candidate to go in the first round the day of the draft—especially in a year with this kind of depth—but such is the case this year with Onelki Garcia Speck, a lefthander who defected from Cuba. Garcia could go as highly as the back half of the first round.

Details on Garcia are fuzzy, but Baseball America has learned that he throws in the 92-95 mph range with an above-average curveball. An article (in Spanish) in The New Herald by Jorge Ebro from 2008 said Garcia Speck was 20 years old, which would make him 23 this year.

The agency representing Garcia, Miami Sports Consulting, LLC, has reportedly sent teams a fax demanding a major league deal, but as a Cuban that must be drafted instead of signed as a free agent, his leverage appears limited.

Is there a draft that means less than the baseball amateur draft?

I do get interested in it, but man, it's tough for me to really care.

The baseball draft is BY FAR the deepest of the drafts every year. You'd be lucky to get 5 good players out of most NBA Drafts and only about 30 out of the NHL Draft. But this is also a liability when it comes to fans following it. Most don't, but even the ones who do don't stay past the 1st Round.

If only they would fix the $%^&! stupid eligibility and signability problems, which cost them fans of the local teams following it, it'd be the 2nd best Draft in Pro Sports...

I certainly wouldn't argue with Matusz and Britton but calling Arrieta an ace is a huge stretch. That guy's got #4/5 written all over him.

Did I hear Gammons correctly ? Hultzen has a 20 million inheritance that kicks in when he is 25 if he becomes a doctor ?

Those 3 are their 3 best pitchers right now. That is what I meant. No doubt about it.
In case you didn't know, Arrieta leads the club in Wins and SO.
He's third in AVG & WHIP.
So...... :ugeek: ::facepalm::

Well, technically, if he just goes to medical school (obviously wouldn't be a doctor at 25 unless he is Doogie Howser  ). Family has some serious money, and his father has said all along that they are open to negotiations once the time comes, but Hultzen staying in school is not just a possible ploy or leverage - he has incentive to stay.

Literally the only nice thing on Arrieta's statline this year is his W-L record and we all know how important that is. Guthrie's been a hell of a lot better.
The strikeouts are half decent but the walks are a disaster and he dishes up a ton of gopher balls.
There's virtually no way he belongs in a conversation with Matusz and Britton. But whatever.

He could always go back to school correct? So basically that money is there if he wants to pursue that career if his baseball career doesn't pan out. Sounds like a nice safety net.

Yeah, he could go back for his senior year, which will cost him leverage and money as far as baseball goes. Don't get me wrong, I do think he will sign with whomever drafts him, but as you said he does have a very nice safety net.

Anyone else see Norris as a good fit for Toronto at #21? Their system is pretty dry in left handed starters past Romero.
