"The Oakland Athletics may not be in Oakland for much longer, if new reports about the prove true: USA Today writer Bob Nightengale reports that sources say the Athletics will be granted permission to move to San Jose by February."

Thoughts?

That's a BIG market that could make another powerhouse somewhere down the line in California. I'd be interested to hear what you think....

Apparently when the A's were shopping Gio Gonzalez they were asking for 4 prospects from high-A who were a few years away from the majors. The speculation around here was that they were trying to build a team in anticipation of moving in 3 or 4 years. I haven't heard anything about them moving sooner.

Great news for the A's. I wonder if they are going to build this?

As a lifelong A's fan, the move excites me (and not just because I live in San Jose). I have many awesome memories of the A's in the Coliseum, but the time has come for a new stadium!

All of that IT money may end up building a huge powerhouse. I like it.

Big time. I went there once and I been minor league parks better than that.

I'd love the move. I live just outside SJ and they'd make a killing there. Huge population and pretty good sports fans. The Sharks draw really well and soccer has been doing well enough.

I would be interested to see what the A's have to give to the Giants to get this done. The Giants own the rights to the San Jose area and currently have a single A team there. Plus the Giants have been blocking this move for a long time.

Seems like they would like not having a team as close. Although the fan base is probably better financially.

As an old school fan who doesn't like change, I don't like the idea. But baseball is a business now more than ever. So if it's a financial move for the team they why not. I didn't like the Brewers moving to the NL. But I got over it in time. I'll get over the Astros going to the AL and the A's moving to San Jose.

Sure, but the A's are dying. They were in Oakland for years and had success, but that was a different game back then.

The move would be good for them then. Hopefully it works out.

On a slightly different note, I recently moved from Northern California to New Mexico, and I was wondering if there's any way I can watch the bay area teams here. All NM has is a couple of college programs and I have no interest following proteams from Texas, Arizona, and Colorado.

I'm looking forward to the A's hopefully being relevant again. Good riddance to the Oakland Mausoleum.

I live in the East Bay and the last time I followed the A's was when McGwire and Canseco was tearing it up (and I grew up in Texas watching them!).

I'm GLAD they're moving to San Jose - if any of you are from the area (Oakland where the stadiums are), or not, that whole area is......well, I'll put it this way - I refuse to watch night games there. Sorry, no offense towards Oaklanders, but man.....just not that safe.

Depending on how you view Billy Beane your answer can differ to this question. But can you imagine what he could do with a competitive payroll?

So many teams are in cities that are just a shell of what they once were. I don't like it that much either, but it does make sense to move teams slightly like the A's to put them where the people have moved.

Probably half the league is in cities that are now smaller than those without teams due to population changes.
