Slowly but surely, I'm closing in on 10 new O'Neill pickups for the year which was my primary goal. After a dry spell, this card was a HUGE addition! I was bummed to see I had initially missed this on COMC a few weeks ago. The buyer had sent it to PSA for grading and it was eventually relisted. Thankfully I was able to land it the second time around. His only playing year auto which had eluded me, I had never seen one for sale prior to this in 20 years. Hand numbered to /21, astronomical odds from 2001 Upper Deck.

Other smaller pickups, including a few 86-87 Fleer Basketball for the set which I've undertaken in lower condition. Puts me at 53/132 so far, including a bunch of the big names. Still need a lot of commons. Only big cards remaining are Jordan, Barkley, Erving, Akeem, Malone. Was happy to trade for a Bird, Magic, Drexler at the last local show. Also picked up a few OPC Thurman Munsons, working on the 9 card run. Also added 1990-1993 Marvel Universe and Masterpieces cards from local stores, need about a dozen commons to complete the sets. Will eventually get around to getting the holograms.

Now only if @MrMet2.0 would have the pride to show off his Rick Porcello Mets jersey!

Or maybe he doesn't show it because he doesn't want the rest of us to get jealous?

Something draws me to odd uniformed items. I didn't even realize Averill was a Tiger until I saw this. He was also a Brave briefly. Couple more GS Gallery cards too.

Not really a big purchase, but I couldn’t pass on this card for $1.25 shipped. For some reason, I have fond memories of 1992 Topps more than any other set from the early 90s.

Probably due to the fact that was the first set where I could afford to buy a few packs here and there due to mowing lawns that summer.

But, I digress.

Going to have to make two posts since I let my beginning of the month eBay search goodies pile up AND got a COMC shipment.

First up a few big ones:

102224-01.jpg

Huge pickup for my signed 1988 Topps set. I already had the All-Star card so this finishes my Puckett needs. I only need 10 cards to complete the set now:
Don Mattingly Record Breaker
Chuck Finley
Damaso Garcia
Carmen Castillo
Barry Bonds
Donnie Moore
Gary Carter
Nolan Ryan Turn Back the Clock
George Brett
Bo Jackson.
These are all cards I want good certification on. I just have to be patient and Mattingly, Finley, and Brett will show up for prices I'm good with. Bonds is not hard to find but will cost me around $300 so I've been procrastinating on that. Bo is weirdly expensive. Carter is weirdly hard to find. Ryan is not a tough auto but nobody in their right mind would get the ugly TBC card signed so that's a hard one to track down but I'm sure one will pop up some day. Castillo is very tough but I've seen certified copies of cards from other '88 sets so one should eventually surface. Moore is similar, I've seen several certified '88 Donruss autos but no Topps...the Topps card is very dark so not many people would have picked it to get signed. The one that will keep me from completing the set is Damaso Garcia. If one ever shows up I imagine it will go for a ton of money.

102224-02.jpg

1999 Fleer Starting 9 Kenny Rogers 1/9. This is my third A's card in the set, I already had Jason Giambi and Ryan Christenson. I'll never actually complete the team set since Rickey is in it and I don't even want to imagine how much that would sell for. But it's a really neat '90s parallel so I still try to pick them up when I see them.

102224-03.jpg

1999 Metal Universe Precious Metal Gems Ed Sprague 43/50...same story as the Starting 9, I'll never complete it because there's a Rickey, but hey I'm over halfway there. The set is popular enough that this cost me a hundred bucks even with the big chip on the left edge.

102224-04.jpg

Some sweet McGwires. This gets my 1997 Pinnacle Certified Mirror Red, 1997 New Pinnacle Artist's Proofs, and 1996 Leaf Preferred Gold/Press Proofs needs down to 1 each (Canseco, Canseco, and freaking Jose Herrera). I also still need the "Home" version of the Home/Away McGwire. The 2023 Topps '88 All-Stars Black auto is 14/50.

102224-05.jpg

2022 Topps Archives Foilfractor 1/1 Kevin Smith...I don't go after 1/1s that much recently but I happened to see this one and put in a lowball bid and won it for less than $20. Still chipping away at the 2010 Topps Target Retro parallels. And some color...the Puason would have been a big card when it was released but he ended up being a dud.

102224-06.jpg

Walberg finishes my '33 Goudey needs aside from the two very expensive Jimmie Foxx cards. Barney McCoskey completes '48 Bowman. I still have a ways to go with '49 and 1 more to finish 1950.

102224-07.jpg

Team set completers: 1997 Stadium Club Members Only (including the inserts), 2008 Finest Gold Refractors/50, 2009 Topps 206 Mini Piedmont (the Foxx is an SP variation), 1977 Burger Chef discs (reluctantly purchased since that's obviously a Pirates cap), 2003 Topps Kanebo Japan, and 2005 Topps Pristine Red Die-Cuts/66* (there are 6 regular cards/66 and 6 more with either GU or auto that are/3...I don't have any of the /3's).

102224-08.jpg

More team set completers: 2012 Topps Silk/50, 2019 Topps Chrome Blue Refractors/150, 2014 Allen & Ginter Mini Black, 2023 Topps Gold, 2023 Topps '88 Blue, and 2019 Panini Prizm Silver Prizms.

These are all from COMC...they actually shipped a lot faster than I expected this time. Using the cheapest shipping method it was only 12 days from my shipment request to when I received the cards. Granted I live about 5 minutes from where it was shipped from so that probably cut 2-3 days off the time.

102224-09.jpg

A couple of '52s, a 1993 Oakland A's Magazine Dream Team McGwire, and two '98 Tek Diffractors of AJ Hinch. I have no desire to try for a complete Diffractor run of any player, but I do pick them up when I see them cheap. In total I have 4 Hinch Diffractors and 2 Ben Grieves.

102224-10.jpg

Some '00s stuff. The Signature Sensations Kendall is an SP that doesn't pop up a lot. The 2004 Mirror Gold Dye auto was the last card from that set numbered above /5 that I needed. There are several short-prints /5 and under, though.

102224-11.jpg

Slightly more recent. 2007 Bowman Chrome Gold Refractor Andrew Bailey, 2008 Stadium Club Gold Photographer's Proof/50 Carlos Gonzalez, 2011 Topps Heritage Red Tint Trevor Cahill (the 2011 tint cards have really dried up and are very hard to locate), 2009 UD '89 buyback Curt Young, and Upper Deck Gold parallels of A's legends Mike Piazza and Nomar Garciaparra.

102224-12.jpg

Even more recent. The 2024 Heritage Mini Blue/Torre card is a Purple parallel 06/15. The AJ Puk is thankfully a player-worn sock card and not a game-used sock card.

102224-13.jpg

Some Bowman Chrome color, with a Bowman Heritage Chrome card sneaking in there.

102224-14.jpg

Nice looking 2019-2020 Topps Chrome Refractors.

102224-15.jpg

More Refractors, including a Finest Khris Davis 01/50.

102224-16.jpg

2019-2020 Topps parallels. Not sure why the color saturation is so different on the two 2020 Independence Day parallels, other than the Murphy is from the Update set.

102224-17.jpg

Chipping away at 2023 Topps Black/72 (still need 3 from the regular set and 7 from Update) - plus a Golden Mirror SSP of Hogan Harris, who was pretty good in limited action this year.

102224-18.jpg

Last, a bunch of 2024 Topps parallels. I didn't quite finish the team logo border cards before Update came out, I still need 1. I've kept up pretty well with the Black parallels this year and am only missing 3, plus everything from Update.

Yeah. This is true. Every season he starts off with high hopes, then gets injured, and that's that. And what's worse is that every year the Angels - and their fans - talk themselves into thinking they can compete, and then July rolls around and they're 15 games back.

Even with everything he's already accomplished, Trout's injuries still make him such a "what if". And the Angels as a team really are kind of a sad parallel. The Angels are like the Rockies of the west coast. And that's no compliment.

Sad day when you can buy a Trout gold refractor for less than $30 shipped

Trout doing high knee running with a 150+ lb barbell on his back (on concrete, not even running in grass) was the most perplexing sports training I've ever seen. Injury seems the only possible outcome for that. Its turned him into the whole cast of The Wizard of Oz. . . lacking the brain like the Scarecrow, having the joint quality of the Tinman, and being as cuddly as the Cowardly Lion. Okay maybe cancel that last one!

His performance against the Mariners might be the best anyone has ever done vs 1 team, hitting 54 home runs and robbing roughly 12 iirc. (not a favorable park for RHH)

Bo Jackson is in a category with other guys like Orel Hershiser, Kirk Gibson and a few others who have this unwavering fanbase willing to pay obscene money. There are deceased players who were similar as well, Like Maris, Munson , Fox, Valenzuela now and others that are just way, way above where their career should place them for cost. Scarcity is always a factor for some, but sometimes it is sheer demand.

I understand Carter stopped signing cards of certain years, despite being a collector himself. Seems like he would be more accommodating, knowing how difficult collecting can be for certain subjects.
