They were saying that the Chiefs were also very interested in Sproles, he's a god over there.

The improbable David Carr sweepstakes may begin and end with the 49ers.

Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger reports that Carr's agent is talking contract with San Francisco Saturday evening. "Signs look good" for Carr to complete a deal.

Carr, who also has received interest from the Cardinals and Browns, left the 49ers facility without speaking to reporters as promised Saturday, possibly because he didn't want to answer questions about Patrick Willis' welcome-to-town tweets.

Willis may get a chance to express his feelings to Carr in more than 140 characters soon enough.

Glad to see him out of a Packer uni.

He was a non-factor for the Packers in the 3-4, they were better without him. Hardly a loss for the green and gold. I'm just glad the Packers signed Clifton.

A nice signing IF he's not too old to be done and IF the knee ends up OK. He should really help them with that pass rush.

Lousy draft picks (Harvey especially) have killed their pass rush, especially in a division where you really need it, with three All-Pro caliber QBs.

And Justin Fargas got cut from Oakland. I think he should have plenty of interest around the league. He was in a very crowded backfield in Oak-town, but did show flashes of being a starter.

He's only 30 so he should have a few more good seasons in him. The knee might take a season to heal but I think he'll make a difference on their DL.

It's official. The new regime led by Mike Holmgren has coaxed two free agents to Cleveland.

The team has announced the acquisition of tackle Tony Pashos and linebacker Scott Fujita.

"We are extremely happy that we were able to get Scott and Tony signed so quickly," G.M. Tom Heckert said in a team-issued release. "They are two players we had targeted from the start of free agency. Both are smart, tough and physical -- the type of players that the Browns are looking for.

"Scott possesses tremendous size for a linebacker, and this will allow him to play inside or outside in our 3-4 defense. He has been a starter throughout his career, has been exposed to several different defensive schemes and has been successful in all of them. He is a great leader and played a big part in the success that the Saints achieved last year.

"We like the fact that Tony has started a lot of games in this league, and has been a part of some productive offenses with Baltimore and Jacksonville. Although he's started at right tackle, he has the versatility to play inside as well, and he will come in and compete at both tackle and guard with us."

Though neither player is young -- Fujita is 30 and Pashos will join him there on August 3 -- the obvious goal is to look for ways to improve the team in the short-term, and to provide strong leadership to young players who will be the nucleus of the roster in the future. Fujita, with his brand-new Super Bowl ring, can do just that.

Fujita is a solid LB but I'm not sure how well he'll fit in the 3-4 since he has been a 4-3 guy for most of his career.

UH OOOOOOOOOOH NATE! Time for me to dump off the once nice 02 Gridiron Kings David Carr RC I've been holding onto

Alex Smith has a new backup quarterback to worry about in San Francisco.

David Carr agreed to terms with the 49ers, according to Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News. The deal was first mentioned by Carr's former teammate Kevin Boss, who tweeted the news. (What is it about Carr-related tweets making news?)

Carr's arrival doesn't bode well for Shaun Hill, who lost his starting job to Smith during last season. Hill is due $1.5 million in 2010, and is hardly a lock to keep his roster spot.

The chance to get back on the field was paramount in Carr's search. The 49ers are committed to Smith as a starter, but Carr knows better than anyone a number one overall pick at quarterback has to win eventually or lose his gig.

The Giants want Jeff Garcia as their backup. Jim Sorgi is also supposed to go into NYC. Who would have thought one guy would back up both Mannings in his career?

Just saw on a Dolphins board that Ryan Clark was in town - and didn't want to leave without a contract.

Wondering if I could get some thoughts on Clark from the Steelers fans. Though I have to admit if he is only semi-competent it will be a major upgrade over Wilson.

Apparently Jamal Williams is headed to Denver, great now he's going to stuff the Chargers running game two times a year.

Not a Steelers fan but IMO he's a solid Strong Safety.

I think I heard Clark re-signed with Pitt after the Miami visit.

Williams would be a good addition at NT for the Denver.

Smart signing of Fujita by Cleveland. I was hoping he would stay and re-sign. He's been a rock for the Saints and is a pretty decent blitzer who seldom misses an assignment.
