sounds like you both had a great time. I saw Frank Caliendo a few years ago here at the Improv and I laughed so hard I almost cried. he puts on a great show. congrats on the winnings and it sounds like your wife is a very smart gambler :D

Tonights game was brutal. Let down by our only good thing we got going our pen.

Pedro is looking alot better to me and starting to drive the ball.

Cutch is coming out of the mini slump.

The starting pitching still is dreadfull some nights, sorry Maholm you did pitch well. If your going to plunk three dudes why not Braun?

I know this is an obvious statement but until the starting pitching gets better this team is going to struggle. I am encouraged by the play of all the young position players but the poor pitching is holding this team back.

Regardless of what happens at the trade deadline (I doubt we pick anyone up), we need another starting pitcher or two going into next season.

We basically have 2 guys in Mahlom and Ohlendorf who are good enough to keep in the rotation.

Duke needs to come back healthy and pitch much better than he did so far this season. Also he is a ground ball pitcher and this D will not help him.

Lincoln is a work in progress. 1 good start out of like 6 or 7 isn't good. Until his change develops he is going to get knocked around unless his curve is super, which it was 1 start ago.

If we trade a starter we will be in really bad shape. It looks like Penn is going to be picked up by a Japanese team. D Cutch just got sent down again, Eveland is a turd and Buress is well not much better.

Are we really going to depend on Sean Gahallager next season?

We have no prospect starters in AAA, Morris would be the first I assume to make an impact from the minors.

Unless we want to lose another 100 games next year we need to find 1 to 2 more starters capable of pitching 200 innings at sub 5 ERAs.

There's also a Walker signing next Saturday at the PNC in Richland from from 12-1. I'll probably just hit the Pedro signing.

Yeah, I saw that one as well, but I already have a few Walker's and don't have anything of Pedro yet, so I'll definitely be at the Pedro signing.

couldn't agree with your assessment more.

I think Lincoln will get himself together after a few more starts. at first I wanted them to send him back to Indy but why not let him face MLB batters since this team is going nowhere.

I realize it's hard to get any decent free agent pitchers to sign here but something needs to be done.

I have no issue with Lincoln up right now. He was going to work on his change at AAA anyway. I like the fact he goes 6 innings almost every start so that is something. He just doesn't have a dominate fastball to fall back on so his breaking stuff or change has to be effective. He is a good prospect but only a 3 to 5 type guy.

Morton has been the real bust. I watched him pitch on July 4th and he got shelled in the first inning than he got shelled again last night. His confidence is obviously gone. He may need another phantom injury and a visit to a sports psychologist and some Grienke pills to get back on track.

Our 6-8 hitters and 3-5 starters are just really brutal right now. We hardly have a chance to win any game pitched by anyone not Maholm or Ohlendorf. That made last nights rare bullpen blown save really suck.

We might not win again in 4 to 5 starts. Our expected win total based on runs this year is right at 60 I believe.

I am really getting tired of the waiver claims on borderline pitchers that have been shelled throughout their MLB careers. Meek, some of this year's bullpen signings, and to a lesser extent Veal have all been fantastic examples of getting players off the scrap heap that turn out to be valuable parts.

However, with the guys I mentioned they either had very live arms that just needed more refinement/development time, or in the case of Lopez and Carrasco, they have had success in the bigs. Eveland, Penn, Gallagher, etc have bounced around to 3-4 teams and been rocked at every opportunity in the majors. Does it hurt to take a chance on them? In the larger scheme of things, of course not. But it certainly looks bad when you claim a pitcher off waivers, he stays up for a week, gets destroyed, and then DFA'd.

As far as improving the staff...we may be able to lure a lower tier starter here by overpaying, but it probably won't be more than a 4-5 type much like the guys we already have. I am optimistic that Morris and/or Owens will continue to develop, and could be in the rotation by late next year. But still, it's hard to see significant improvement without a true 1-2 starter.

that blown save last night certainly was tough to take.

I really wish Gorzo was still here. I know he was another 3-5 starter but he ate up innings as well and he is better than Karstens or Morton.

Hell yeah I wish Gorzo was here, that trade made no sense other than they got fed up with Gorzo. Hart and Ascanio getting hurt wasn't in the plan I know but Gorzo is a much better pitcher than every starter we have outside Maholm and Ohlendorf.

I am new here but I am glad there is an intelligent thread about the Pirates here.

We have some young guys in the works like Owens and Morris. If we sighn both Tallion and Allie this year we will really kick start our rebuild but we need to work on the MLB team in the meantime.

I agree we pick up these scrap heaps and realize they suck. The Eveland thing was really silly as we gave up a guy who may actually turn out to be at least a competent reliever in the ML's for a guy NOBODY wanted. We could have had him for free essentially.

NH is trying but I agree he seems to have an issue judging MLB talent. I know the buy low mentality but outside of a few relievers and Garret Jones nobody has panned out. Milledge, LaRoche basically anyone in the Bay deal outside of Morris. Even Clement and Cedeno haven't done much this year (Clement's learning catching again at AAA and Cedeno is in the doghouse).

WOuld a Randy Wolf really solve anything, probably not. But if it means a legitmate MLB pitcher who gives a chance to win while we are waiting for the youth then I am all for it.

I also would like to see a veteran or two like a Randy Wolf brought in to help these young guys.

I think having a veteran starter on the staff to provide some leadership would be a big advantage. I know Duke has been around for awhile now but I think someone who has 10 years or more in the Majors could provide some great leadership not only for the young pitching staff but also for the rest of the clubhouse.

thanks and I would imagine Pedro will be a Red Hot Rookie. they have only announced 4 of the 10 so far so I can definitely see him being one.

I'm glad you were able to snag a copy Dave. I had no idea Pedro had an etopps. I've been meaning to pick up all the etopps Pirates from past years for some time now, but it always slips my mind.
