Paul Maholm pitched another gem last night against the Braves. he threw for 7 innings scattering 4 hits while striking out 2 walking 3 and allowed no runs. Maholm's ERA dropped to 0.83 which is second on the team to Zach Duke 0.59. Nate McLouth hit his 3rd home run of the season to help lead the Bucs to a 5 and 5 start.

Paul looked very good yesterday, though he threw a few more balls than usual. It was a great game, though I'm not sure how I feel about those black alternates yet. Traffic was horrible though, between the Pens, Pirates, and whatever was going on at the theaters all ending around the same time.

Doumit bobblehead today :D

Does anyone have an extra Zach Duke Bobblehead that they have gotten from a game? I am long way from Pittsburg so I can't get them from the games. If I want one i'd have to get it from ebay. Anyways, I'd be interested in trading for one if anyone has one. Thanks,

James

Mark I don't like the new black alternate jerseys. they are better than the red ones but still pretty bad. I think they look really cheap and something Starter would have produced in the early 90's. I do however love the new home and road jerseys and I am glad they got rid of the vests.

the Pirates defeated the Braves 10-0 this afternoon. Snell pitched a very solid game for the second game in a row. he threw 7 strong innings giving up 4 hits walking 3 and allowing 0 runs. the bullpen went 2 innings giving up no hits. Craig Monroe hit (2) 3 run home runs and had 6 rbi's.

the Bucs are 6-5 to start the season and play the Braves tomorrow at 1:35. the pitching matchup will be

Javier Vazquez, RHP (0-1, 4.50) vs Zach Duke, LHP (2-0, 0.59)

I hated the red alternates at first, but they grew on me by the end of last year. I liked the inclusion of red in the uniforms in the late 90's. I do like the new jerseys, though I wish they would bring back the cursive script on the road unis.

For those who asked about the Duke and Doumit bobbleheads, I'll keep my eyes open. I've found thrift stores are great for finding bobbles. I've been able to find the majority of the bobbles I didn't have for $3-5, so I'd be happy to pick them up if I see them.

While I'm still a long way from being optimistic, the Pirates racked up yet another shutout tonight, with seven strong innings from Ohlendorf. The rotation is shaping up nicely so far 1-4, with hopefully Dan McCutchen, Gorzo, or Dumatrait stepping into the 5th slot before too long. I don't think Karstens has much of a future.

that was another solid performance by a Pirates starter tonight. I agree Karstens will not be in the rotation much longer and I hope Gorzelanny will take his place.

I'd like to see Gorzelanny back up, but I get the sense he's in management's dog house right now and is a long way from dominating at AAA. McCutchen's already 25 or 26, so it may be worth giving him couple of starts to see what he has. Even in the best of scenarios, I see this team being a solid ace and #3 starter away from contending, assuming the lineup develops as expected. Maybe Lincoln could become that 3 starter. As for the ace...

Re: Official Pirates Thread-Doumit out 8-10 weeks

Ryan Doumit will have surgery Thursday on his wrist, keeping him out 8-10 weeks.

I have liked what I've seen of Jaramillo thus far, but I'm still not too excited about seeing he and Robinzon Diaz splitting time behind the plate for the next 2 months.

I really hope the Buccos have some good insurance on Doumit's new contact. This guy is absolutely unable to stay healthy.

Dang. My fantasy teams are going to be unhappy.

that sucks.

I think Jaramillo will do a good job and hopefully Diaz will not be too bad when he gets a start.

Re: Official Pirates Thread-Doumit out 8-10 weeks

I like Jaramillo defensively, and he's looked like he's at least competent with the bat so far. However, losing Doumit is a huuuuuge blow to the lineup. Going off of tonight's lineup, it looks like the new heart of the order is going to be Adam Laroche, Moss/Monroe, and Andy Laroche at 4,5,6. That doesn't exactly strike fear into the heart of opposing pitchers. I think the biggest impact may be on Freddy and Nate, without the switch hitter in the 4 slot protecting them.

Then again, with the way the staff has pitched, 3-4 runs a game might just be enough some nights.

Re: Official Pirates Thread-Doumit out 8-10 weeks

Pirates beat the Marlins again tonight 3-2. Karstens pitched a good game and Freddy Sanchez went 3-4 and hit a bomb to left. Matt Capps recorded 4th his save of the season. the Bucs improve to 8-6 on the season and look to sweep the Marlins Thursday at 12:35 with Paul Maholm on the mound against Ricky Nolasco.
