Re: Official Pirates Thread-Clinch 17th losing season

Zachary is finally getting some run support today! Hopefully they don't put Matt Capps in later...

I was at the game today and Zach pitched a great game going 8.2 innings allowing 4 hits and 1 run. the Pirates wrapped up their home season with a 11-1 victory over the Dodgers.

It was nice to end the home season on a high note. Would have been nice to see Zach get the CG though.

Dave, did you go through the alumni auto line? Not sure if it was because Bream was adding scripture, but that was by far the slowest I have ever seen the alumni line move.

Sorry to hear that, though you didn't miss much. It took me about 45 mins to get through the line, compared to 10 mins for the alumni signing last Thursday..

I could have got autos from a few other bullpen guys today, but I didn't have cards of anyone but Dumatrait. I really need to get some cards of the current roster before the winter events start up.

Grrrr! I was soooo pissed when John Russell took Zach out of the game, I was watching on mlb tv and I heard the crowd boo'ing and then shortly after that they gave him his ovation. Its sad though, Zach has a 3.94 ERA and has 15 freaking losses...

Re: Official Pirates Thread-Clinch 17th losing season

Just another thing about JR that frustrates the hell out of me. His explanation for the move was so that Duke could get an ovation from the crowd, and Donnie could get some work in.

I fail to see how throwing what was it....3 or 4? pitches constitutes 'getting work in.' Duke was at 100 pitches, which is still relatively low.

I'm not crazy about the idea of changing coaching staff/managers every year or two, but have trouble seeing JR managing a winning club in Pittsburgh.

On a related note, a guy next to me asked Dave Kerwin if he would be back next year, and he did what looked to me to be a 'yes' head nod. Take that for what it's worth, but it would definitely be a huge step forward to have Kerrigan and Hill back next year.

Re: Official Pirates Thread-Clinch 17th losing season

One of the big reasons for this is because the team has wasted their first round picks for the last TWO DECADES (outside of Kendall).

Granted, you cant say much about the last 4 years because they either havent reached the Majors or are just starting out (Mccutch for ex.) but over this TWO DECADE span, EIGHT of their first rounders HAVENT EVEN MADE THE MAJORS.

In fact, six guys who did make it to the Majors have done/ did absolutely nothing for the club.

Since the Pirates dont have money to spend, they MUST develop players either through drafts or intl signings.

Re: Official Pirates Thread-Clinch 17th losing season

No team is going to hit on their first rounders every year. Even a team like the A's that is known for drafting and developing players in a small market totally missed on 3 or 4 of the high picks from the 'moneyball' draft. That's the nature of the system.

I think the greater fault lies in the fact that the Pirates have gotten little to no impact value out of the upper rounds of the draft. If you look at most of the homegrown talent that has come out of the system, it has largely been from lower round draft picks. Now, this could probably mean one of two things.

a) The Pirates have had incompetent talent evaluators for nearly 2 decades.
b) The Pirates are horrible at developing talent, and guys are not able to move through the system on raw ability alone.

While a may be partially true, I would think the 'even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while' theory would come into play at some point in the last two decades.

I think b holds far more truth. It seems like many of the guys who made it out of the system were low round picks who may have been able to make adjustments on their own or were the 'self teaching' type. Meanwhile, almost all of the 'toolsy' type players have struggled, often after having breakout seasons in the low minors (Hermansen, JR House, Van Benschoten)

To me, this says that these guys are able to get by on raw athleticism, but hit a wall once they hit the upper minors, and clearly the coaching staffs have been unable to help them adjust. Keep in mind the Pirate system has been notorious for utterly failing to teach plate discipline at any level for much of the 90's and 00's.

Re: Official Pirates Thread-Say it Ain't Sano

Aaaaand in what will be yet another PR disaster for the Pirates, Miguel Angel Sano has signed with the Twins for a reported $3.15 million bonus, topping the Pirates offer of $2.6million.

While I didn't see Sano being the savior of the franchise and second coming of Roberto Clemente that some Bucco fans (particularly those on the PG blog) seemed to think he was, it is significant that we got shut out of any potential impact signings in Latin America this year. Personally, I'd like to see the team reallocate that money to Wagner Mateo, assuming he is healthy.

Re: Official Pirates Thread-Say it Ain't Sano

I'll probably be there Friday and Saturday, but that could change depending on autograph lineups. I think it would be great if we have some kind of get together maybe Saturday morning, since that is usually the most popular day. There should be more than enough places in the Strip for us to grab something to get prior to the doors opening.

Re: Official Pirates Thread-Say it Ain't Sano

A few confirmed names for Piratefest:

Maholm, McCutchen, LaRoche, Van Slyke, and Maz

Good to see they made an effort to bring in some past stars, and possibly two of the most popular living players in franchise history. Obviously more players will be added, so hopefully we'll see some new faces from the current roster.

Re: Official Pirates Thread-Say it Ain't Sano

the Pirates signed free agent shortstop Bobby Crosby today for 1 year and $1 million plus bonus incentives. maybe a change of scenery will help Crosby. he will supposedly be fighting Ronny Cedeno for the starting spot but I would think he will outshine Cedeno and be the starter.

Re: Official Pirates Thread-Say it Ain't Sano

I'm interested to see how the bench and bullpen play out this spring. If Crosby doesn't win the starting spot at short, I would assume he's second on the depth chart at SS and 3B, which would limit Vazquez to 2B. However, if you have Vazquez as the primary backup at 2B, Dewlyn is nothing more than a below average corner outfielder and pinch hitter. I'd much rather have Dewlyn's bat and below average glove than Vazquez's below average glove and nonexistent bat.

Also, should be worth noting that the Rule 5 pick Raynor should have a very good shot at making the roster, simply because I can't really think of anyone, with the possible exception of Milledge, who can play center.

Ultimately, you know it's going to be a rough year when you're spending this much time thinking about which AAAA players will make the bench...
