This could be bad.

Tony Romo will do anything to avoid another December slide, even if that means conjuring up some painful memories from January past.

The Cowboys used Romo as their holder for field goal kicks in Wednesday's practice.

"We feel like we need to do something, whether it's the whole operation itself or some of the parts,'' head coach Wade Phillips said. "We've got to get more confidence from our kicker. We need to do better. There's a possibility we'll make a change this week as far as the holder is concerned.''

The usual holder, punter Matt McBriar, has mishandled a few snaps lately and kicker Nick Folk has been struggling. Backup quarterback Jon Kitna has never held in his career.

Phillips once joked when he took the Cowboys job that Romo was "retiring" from holding. McBriar even said as much during the 2007 season while lauding Romo's ability to bounce back from his famous botched snap.

"Everybody thought it might be something Tony couldn't dance back from," McBriar said. "But they don't realize that Tony's not in the league to be a holder and he'll probably never be a holder again."

We can't kill the Cowboys for possibly making the change. Addressing the issue makes more sense than hoping it magically disappears.

Of course, Romo hasn't held on kicks since that fateful day in Seattle.

At least he knows the footballs won't be extra slick for this week's home game.

I have a feeling this is all in the name of a trick play (no way they would want Romo to hold for FG's unless it gave them the option for him to stand up & pass it to someone). I know there would be no way they could live it down if it occurred again, so it's really not worth it unless they've got other plans for Romo's "ball-holding"

Wait. They need to make a change so they decide to put their franchise QB as their holder? In who's mind does that make sense? You keep your QB off the field outside of offensive plays. Sure, the holder rarely ever gets hit, but it does happen, and are his FG holding skills really that much better than anyone else?

Normally all the "ball holding" he does is off the field. I would love to see history repeat itself.

Unrelated, but I love this pic of Romo's new McFarlane:

The only logical reason behind putting your starting QB out there is for a trick play. But why not just put your backup out there? He can probably make a decent throw in a fake FG attempt. Its not like Madden where the holder can't throw the ball within 10 yards of the receiver

The anti-Romoism displayed so far will not be tolerated.

Why don't they try out Kitna? Or like I mentioned somewhere else, hire Brad Johnson for the vet minimum to just hold kicks. Put a stipulation in his contract that he is not allowed to throw a ball.

Yes lol. They tried a few players during training camp but no one stood out so Mcbriar got the job.
