Tony Romo will do anything to avoid another December slide, even if that means conjuring up some painful memories from January past.
The Cowboys used Romo as their holder for field goal kicks in Wednesday's practice.
"We feel like we need to do something, whether it's the whole operation itself or some of the parts,'' head coach Wade Phillips said. "We've got to get more confidence from our kicker. We need to do better. There's a possibility we'll make a change this week as far as the holder is concerned.''
The usual holder, punter Matt McBriar, has mishandled a few snaps lately and kicker Nick Folk has been struggling. Backup quarterback Jon Kitna has never held in his career.
Phillips once joked when he took the Cowboys job that Romo was "retiring" from holding. McBriar even said as much during the 2007 season while lauding Romo's ability to bounce back from his famous botched snap.
"Everybody thought it might be something Tony couldn't dance back from," McBriar said. "But they don't realize that Tony's not in the league to be a holder and he'll probably never be a holder again."
We can't kill the Cowboys for possibly making the change. Addressing the issue makes more sense than hoping it magically disappears.
Of course, Romo hasn't held on kicks since that fateful day in Seattle.
At least he knows the footballs won't be extra slick for this week's home game.
