To me, it's surprising how there could be only 200,000 or 100,000 of some of these base cards considering packs are sold at every walmart and target. Well...at least base topps anyways.

Yeah, me too. I'd bet it's closer to double that, especially when you add in retail products, which have alot more "base" added in and less inserts.

And [MENTION=6581]BBCgalaxee[/MENTION], did the article in the 1991 mag say if those numbers were quoted from someone specific or just based on estimates?

Whoa! Look at the prices for Travis Fryman & Todd Van Poppel. I remember when stacks of those were going to buy me a new car in the future. And I'd be able to retire if I had enough Chris Sabo rookies! Ahhh memories.

There was always a huge difference between who was actually hot and what the hobby magazines said. All throughout 1986-1987, those publications couldn't seem to stop falling all over themselves about how great Sportflics were. But the actual hobby never seemed to care for Sportflics.

The most irritating things about the bulk card ads was that prices were subject to change. The 3-5 month lead time for magazine production made trying to purchase any desirable card futile. I remember actually calling one of these places to order a brick of Chuck Knoblauch rookies (or was it Cal Eldred) that was listed at something like 20 cents apiece after Beckett price "skyrocketed" to $1.00. They said that the current price was $1.15 per card. Hrmph.

I started getting SCD in 1986 & didn't stop until the early 2000s and yet I only recall doing mail order twice, even though it was always loaded with ads.

First order was for a lot of '88 Mike Campbell rookies (mariners) from Gary Walter cards (super nice I recall) and then in '96 a bunch of '94 CC Jeter cards from Brent's cards (is that brent&becca?)

Our local LCS owner got alot of us to buy into the '91 Ultra Update Baseball set being huge someday.

Great guy, but he missed on that one and the '90-91 Score hockey set (Lindros RC and 5 special card set), especially the French version...

Pro set (football) said in this magazine that they produced...wait for it....150,000 CASES of their product in '89 which breaks down to 3.5 million BOXES!

23 1/3 boxes per case ? could have sworn they were the standard 20 boxes per case ....

Make that 3 million boxes, thought they were 24 box cases.

The person who was interviewed just said they produced 150k cases the first year.

interesting....if that's the TOTAL number , it would obviously mean TONS of all the basic lo numbers , but i wonder what kind of actual print runs that would translate to regarding the lo series sp's/corrections as well as all the hi series cards ...
