Has a little bit of luck this morning checking COMC. Seller had just listed a 1993 Topps Black Gold ABCD expired redemption. I couldn't have clicked the $1 BIN button any faster.

You THIEF!
Last one sold for $7.75 at auction.

Never thought to check COMC for these! Just picked up an A expired for $1. That's the Bonds/Clark/Dawson/Gwynn/Larkin one. That was almost as good as the B expired I found in a dime box at a show!

I came across this listing on COMC http://www.checkoutmycards.com/Cards/Ba ... ud/2219145 which has led me to do some research on the 1998 Finest No-Protectors, Protectors, and their respective Refractor versions.

I remember years ago when I picked up the No-Protector base version of Olerud for my PC I asked the shop owner what was to stop someone from just peeling off the protector and passing it off as a No-Protector, since the latter are supposed to be a more scarce parallel. He pointed out that the No-Protector base cards have a Refractor-like shine to the backs that's particularly noticible in the statistics/bio portion of the back. Comparing my two base versions I can see the difference.

An "R" by the card number ought to make spotting the Refractors pretty easy, but the COMC card doesn't seem to have the Refractor finish on either side. I came across this article online http://oldschoolbreaks.wordpress.com/20 ... ll-review/ that only further confuses the issue for me. The guy says, "Despite the fact that I’ve had minimal exposure to them, every unprotected refractor I had come across had the refractor finish on both sides, but no “R” on the back. However, I have also seen unprotected cards with an “R” on the back, but with no refractor finish on either side."

Can anyone shed some light on the 1998 Finest versions? The No-Protector Refractor version is the one I still need but I'm not 100% sure the one in the COMC listing is actually that card; plus could there be other variations out there?

Thanks!

No protector has a chrome back. Best way to tell on the scans is look to see if there is a chrome etch outline around the card number. That Olerud looks like a regular refractor. I guess it's possible that there are misprint versions with the chrome back and the "R" but without the refractor finish.
