I posted up a separate thread regarding the end of the 14-year quest to complete the '97 Ultra Dodger base, Gold & Platinum sets. Player collectors know how tough the Platinums can be to track down.

Love those 97 Platinums - the best year.

Unfortunately they remind me of my worst deal ever. I pulled the Jeter and traded it for a Griffey/A-Rod Score Reflextions and something like $15 cash. Ugh.

Got this for $2.89 dlvd on Sportlots:

Just a few days ago I was 2nd highest bidder on the gold griffey clout AP - it sold for $21.50 or something. So I went to sportlots and offered $15 on the same card. They accepted

Yeah, I like that diamondy effect for those clouts more than the horizontal lines effect for the normal cards.

I also love those sunburst-looking artist's proofs from '98 (especially the Goin Jake subset), but I never understood why they didn't let that parallel the entire set. A 200-card base set, but only a 100-card set for the museums and proofs. In other words, no Rusty Greer :(

Some great info and points about Burbank, thanks guys. I've made some purchases from them but mostly on their cards under $5. As most, I'm to the point in my player collection where most cards I need are tough to find and aren't cheap. I was shocked to notice Burbank had SO many that I'm in search of. I've emailed the guy over there and he is pretty good at communicated and it seems he can skim like 10% off any price if you ask, which is good to know.

What's awesome to me is if they did indeed buy a lot of their stuff from a collection in Hawaii(rumored to be a collector who died), then man...can you imagine having a collection like that? Makes you wonder just what's out there that we don't know about. Somebody with a lot of money that has a taste not just for super high end but...everything.

I find it hard to believe they trip and fell on a freakish large collection from Hawaii but who konws. Either way, their pricing is so random. I literally went through and noted all the cards they have that I need and prices, and their is no pattern with their pricing. Plus, why don't they have their own website?! They use beckett and eBay? Just random and they are probably paying enough in fees between the two sites to just afford their own website.

Burbank purchased the Hawai'i collection several years back. The fact is they under cut an East Coast dealer to do so. The EC dealer offer 24 $100K payments, this offer was accepted. Burbank caught wind of the estate, swooped in, and brought a 1.5 Mil check and took it all. I use to live in the area of this collector and knew him to some degree.........Yes the collection was sick and probably worth about 25+ million.

Amazing... what was burbank before this estate sale? Were they a local card shop or wholesaler? Cutting a $1.5M check is no joke.

Do any of you guys have a PSA membership and would be willing to check the population report for three cards for me? I'd really appreciate it.
