Finally got the 1998 Finest cards scanned, here's what I had on my desk. For the no protecors refractors, the card is embossed but it's difficult to see - can mostly see it around the number, that's the best way to tell on scans.

Refractor (graded card - I know crappy scan)

Nice Tutorial Joe.

I just got these all in the mail today. I know most don't like plates, but I collect them and it's really exciting to me when I can get some from 1997 Pinnacle products, the first year.

Luckily there's only one version of the Preview, with it being from the main set of Pinnacle. This plate is actually bigger than the others; 2 5/8 x 3x5/8

These other's are from 1997 New Pinnacle:

Pinnacle-Plates-142-Yellow-Front.jpg

Pinnacle-Plates-142-Black-Back.jpg

Pinnacle-Plates-188-Yellow-Front.jpg

I now have 3/4 of #142 Front plates (just missing the Cyan) and 2/4 of the backs. :D

I got some other good stuff as well, but these are by far the most exciting for me!

Just to complicate matters, I have a Matt Williams No Protector Refractor with the R by the card number, similar to your last two McGwires, but this Williams does indeed refract. I'll have a scan up soon. So it looks like there's six confirmed versions of each 1998 Finest, based on what I have seen and the McGwire scans, as well as four other possibilities based on the other variations):

Base
Base Refractor (R by card #)
Base Refractor (no R by card) - POSSIBLE
Base Refractor (non-refractor finish) - POSSIBLE
Base with etched No-Protector back - POSSIBLE
No-Protector
No-Protector Refractor (no R by card #)
No-Protector Refractor (R by card #)
No-Protector Refractor (R by card #, non-refractor finish) - POSSIBLE
No-Protector Refractor (no R by card #, non-refractor finish)

Has anyone seen any examples of my four theoretical variations? I hope they don't exist, for a lot of player collectors sakes!

Not common but not unheard of; lots of "R" errors in 1998

Yikes.

The only thing I've learned for sure about the no-protector is that they have the chrome-type etching on the front and back which is usually most easily seen around the card number and the stats/bio area on the back. The base cards with the protector do not have this etching on either side, and this would be the way to tell a base card with the protector peeled off from an actual no-protector.

In terms of refractors, I'm more confused than ever since it now seems like there are R and no-R versions, as well as versions with and without the refractor finish.

Now a have a headache! :?

I paid $40 for it. I had the seller end the auction early. I wasn't taking any chances with the other Sandberg collectors. :)

What did you eventually have to shed out for it? I'd also be interested in what % of his stuff you're at.

I paid 100 shipped. More than I wanted to pay. Not sure what percentage I'm at. I know he has a lil over 1,300 cards. I for sure have over 1,000 different cards.

HUGE thanks goes out to gpenko826 for sending this oddball which I've been looking for FOREVER to me for FREE... Unlike some stories I've heard and seen, this is very nice of a member to help another player collector out and not handcuff him!
