In a word, tradition.

My father got me into the hobby at the age of five. I got started with my son even earlier than that, teaching him whatever I could at the time. Whether it was seeing a legend on TV in the old black and white HR Derby, or going through a stack of reprints of HOFers, I'm explaining it all as best I can.

He will be getting a nice box of stuff that I have set aside for him next year for his birthday, but that I will keep a close eye on for him. Will start emphasizing the importance of condition with him before long, and his small collection that he gets next year will be BETTER than what I had at 25.

As I've mentioned time and time again, my father getting me into the hobby is something that I will always be thankful for. I didn't have biggest or best collection around, far from it in fact. What I did/do have is a great affinity for the hobby and the kind of memories that I hope to pass on to my son.

My mail days range from 10 cent reprint cards and 80s box sets from Kmart, to HOF autographs that I never thought I'd own. And no matter what the mailer holds, the level of excitement is the same. THAT is what makes this hobby so great to me.

Respect! You know I wanna go to that hall of fame!!

oh yeah. A good portion of my spending goes to non-card VU memorabilia. Old news papers, tickets, programs, etc. I have the full page Tennessean Spread from when Dudley Field was open. "The South's First Football Stadium", and a full season ticket book from that 1922 season.
