Thanks in advance to anyone that reads this/helps.

I love to open boxes, but as you all know that can get expensive.
Of late I've been thinking of picking up some older boxes that could provide that fun at a lower risk than opening new products.
I really got into the hobby heavily again in 06' - so from that point up I know what there is to know, but before that not so much. So when looking at a site like the baseball card exchange, there is a ton of stuff available $20-60, but not that much info which is a pain.

I figured it was worth the time to take any suggestions from all the wise individuals on this site. To at least give me a starting point, with some products to look into. :D
I've also seen some people on here that seem to break older products like this. so any help from you guys would be especially appreciated.

Overall just looking for something that would be fun to open.
Unique designs or inserts would also be a plus (something lacking in many of today's products)
While I'm certainly not looking to make money - at least having a shot at some high-dollar/collectible inserts/autos (even if the odds against are astronomical) would also be a bonus.

Sorry if that description is vague. Any suggestions are really appreciated.
Thanks

Keep in mind that you are always opening wax for enjoyment purposes. if you "make money", consider that a bonus. NEVER buy any wax with the mindset "i hope to make money here" because you will lose, and that will lessen your enjoyment of it all.

if you want the possibility of a "big hit" then buy any of these Upper Deck Baseball Boxes: 1990 Hi #, 1992 Lo or Hi #, 1994 Hobby those all contain on-card autographs. sure the odds are about 1 in 10,000 packs, but they are there.

i personally have been ripping pre-95 wax lately and am enjoying the hell out of it. Boxes are usually $5 to $10 each and i get to open 36 packs

I love opening older Topps Chrome and Bowman Chrome and Finest. I just got done opening a couple boxes of 1998 Finest series one and two. I didn't pull any huge inserts but it was fun. 1999 Bowman Chrome Series 2 is chock full of great RCs and inserts. I bet you can find a box for around $60 dlvd. That is one of my favorite nostalgic breaks.

I enjoy opening late 90s early 00s Upper Deck MVP boxes. On card autos and different color facsimile autos for inserts. I love the look of the cards, the autos, and I enjoyed building the '99 set.

Thanks guys.
That's exactly what I'm looking for. Some products and years worth looking into......thanks.

I just wish there was more Pacific on that site....I did collect casually at that time, and from what I could remember, and what I still have, they had a lot of cool and unique designs with many of their sets.

Thosebackpages - I know all too well that opening boxes = losing money.
I guess that's what got me on this older wax kick.....I can feed that urge, have fun opening packs, pull some Sox cards (even if their just base) and not be bummed afterward.

Sjrmn91 - I pulled my first Gu'd card in 00' MVP Football. It was a Manning football. Needless to say I thought it was the greatest thing ever. I ran back into the shop and he put it into a holder.....I still have the card and it's never left that holder.
Doesn't MVP have some potentially valuable signature parallels?
Again I realize hitting those is probably like hitting the lottery, but knowing there's even that chance is a good thing to me.

For me a fun older rip has been '98-'01 Pacific, Pinnacle or Skybox products. Tons of inserts, some on card auto chances and normally decent prices.

1998 Donruss has the potential for some BIG cards and is under $20 per.

and 2005 Donruss Champions is more expensive but has tons of "hits" in it...

Good Luck #12 whatever you decide! 8-)

1995 and 1996 Summit, dirt cheap boxes with the potential for awesome 90's inserts. I'll be picking up a few of those myself. Anything Pinnacle or Select should be a good break, actually; one of the best boxes I ever broke was a 1998 Pinnacle. For $15 got a Barry Larkin EPIX plate, Biggio AP for my PC, and lots of other good inserts.

Thanks.
Those look like great suggestions. I was looking on COMC at some 90's pinnacle, and there does seem to be some cool inserts. That was exactly what I was looking for......I'd rather buy a couple boxes like that than buying blasters to scratch the itch. Thanks again.

I've stopped buying modern day hobby boxes. If I'm interested in a player or card, I look on ebay. I've realized that if I spend $150 on a hobby box, I will not break even in value. I've been selling most of my jersey/autographed cards and started collecting rookie cards pre-1990. I find more enjoyment in those cards as I feel that they are not mass-produced like cards today. My 2 cents. Good luck!
