I recently started a new project. My goal is to have a PSA graded example of all Topps sets since 1952. When I started, I wanted to get Topps #1 in the highest grade that my budget would allow. As an example, these are some of the ones I have gotten so far...

Where I am running into a bit of an issue is when card #1 isn't necessarily a good example of what most base cards looked like for that specific year. My goal by the end of this was to display them that showed how the base cards progressed throughout time, while sticking with the card #1 theme. So my question is, do you think I should stick with the #1 theme even though for some years, it looks like this:

Or should I go with a more "base" card like this even though it isn't card #1 :

Any thoughts or opinions are greatly welcomed!

I see what you mean, that bother me too. I'd go with the base example route

Base example would be my Pick too.

How about this: Favorite team? One from that team, if they've been around that long? Or favorite number or favorite Players' number?

Or maybe the reigning MVP?

No matter what you choose, have fun with it!

Thanks for all the feedback! All the ideas makes me wish I would have put a little more thought into it before I started buying!

I think what I will end up doing is getting #1 when it is a base example, and then just the first base in the set when it isn't #1 , no matter what number it is. Haha and as far as the Pafko and some of the other high end ones such as the '53 Robinson, I will probably be saving those for last and simply doing what I can afford and maybe down the road I will be able to upgrade.

First base card in the set. Good luck with a nice 1952 Pafko.

You got me looking at doing the same thing with #80 from each set. 1980 is my birth year. They'd look great in a display case all lined up. Cool idea.

My list is done.
#80 's from 1952-present.
1952-1959 = PSA 7 (Well centered)
1960-1969 = PSA 8 (Well centered)
1970-1979 = PSA 9
1980-present = PSA 10
6 HOFers on my list.
Thanks for the idea.
