My girlfriend and I were emptying out a desk last night to sand and refinish. We sat all the contents out of the drawers on a chair a took it outside to start working on it. I've got a two puppies (shi-poo and bichon-poo) My little shi-poo was sitting at the window watching us work on it for about 30 minutes. I went inside to get another sanding sponge and found my bichon-poo laying beside a chewed up pill bottle with pills laying around her (she's only 1 years old and 8 pounds). She had got it off the chair from the emptied drawers. I wasn't sure how many she injested ,but I knew she was in trouble. With my pajama pants on and no shoes I jumped in my truck and drove to the animal hospital. They had to pump her stomach and use liquid charcoal. They said if I had waited about 30 minutes later she wouldn't have had a chance. About 5 hours and $400 later I had my little girl back. I stayed home today to watch over her. I thank god and the doctors/nurses at the animal hospital for her living. Everyone give their pets a BIG HUG today and be careful what you leave laying around house.

Wow man that is a crazy story. I am glad everything is okay. I love my dog just as I would a close relative man. I have a 12 YO Dauchsund and I love her to death lol. Best wishes!

Thank you. I said "Worst Nightmare" ,because of the horrible image I've got burned in my brain of her laying in a pile of pills that I left sitting out. I wouldn't have been able to live with myself know my irresponsibility caused her to die. Its crazy how close you can become to a pet. I can't imagine loving a child anymore than I love of my pups.

You gotta train that habit out or it'll happen again. Any dog trainer worth their salt can help you with it. My wife has trained all of our dogs to the point that they won't eat anything unless you say "num num".

I'm glad everything turned out well.

Pay for the training. It's cheaper than another vet bill.

Wow, that is horrible. My friend had the same thing happen recently too. It's hard to keep dogs out of stuff. It's a good thing I don't really have any medication around the house.

I'm glad to hear that she is ok now though!

Your wife is good. My dog will EAT anything that's on the ground. Even though she's gone through training, she is an obstinate brat.

Outside of mentally defective dogs (I don't mean this in a bad way, there are damaged dogs just like there are damaged people) any dog can be trained not to eat anything they are not told to eat. It is just a matter of understanding how the dog operates and making it more rewarding to not eat things than to eat them.

EDIT: I don't mean that to come across as harsh :) And yes, my wife is good. She trained her current service dog and is training his replacement now.

Good work not hesitating. My dog once started to choke on some rawhide and actually fell down from lack of oxygen. At the time I didn't know how to give CPR to a dog. Luckily she got the blockage out and was okay, but I certainly know how to give her CPR now.

Give Chloe a huge from me, too.

I am glad you found her in time and she is alright. What kind of pills were they?

Excedrin Migraine 325mg. The sudafed would shut down some of her organs quick like.

My dogs must be related to yours Lisu. My dogs think its fair game as soon as it hits the ground and they are brats.

Sorry to hear that your little one had got into some pills. Glad your dog is ok.
But on a serious note, dude they are like kids and you have to watch what you leave lying around.

Or they're around the same age. My dog just about 1 year and 2 months old. The trainer told me she wouldn't get it until she was at least 2 years old.

Eh, my dog has some brat in her at age 9. Of course she was a rescue terrier from a puppy mill at age 5, so the prime training years were lost. We still got her trained enough to get her a Canine Good Citizenship certificate from the AKC, but beyond that we decided to let her be a terrier.

Here is a picture of Max. Thank god he said no to drugs. Would have been a mess. (Don't ask why my pups have clothing on in every picture..they are a little spoiled)

I'm going to eat lunch...can someone say "num num" for me?

Sit. Down. Touch. Good boy. NUM NUM!

My wife has me pretty well trained as well.

lisu, if a trainer told you it couldn't be trained until the dog was two...well...find a better trainer. It is all a matter of shaping the dog's behavior. If they're a jerk and pull trainer it would be a while before it works. If you find a trainer that uses shaping, your dog won't want to eat everything.
