I was just wondering what your guys' opinions are on Panini auto's for basketball. Is it one of the top brands in basketball autos? I'm looking into investing into a couple players and don't want to be purchasing a product that will not retain its value. Thanks for any help.

From what I've seen secondary value on pretty much all of Panini's releases this year has been horrible.

That being said, their currently the only game in town. So I guess it depends what players you're looking for?
Obviously if their rookies you have no other choice than Panini, but if their veterans/legends - you can probably find better stuff. Probably can get good deals on the veteran Panini auto's, but that's probably b/c the sets aren't as well received as something like Exquisite. Personally if it's something you'll have for a while, I always say go with whatever set is most aesthetically pleasing to you.

If you let us know the players you may be looking for, I or someone else can probably give you a better idea of "the best" auto's and auto sets to go after.

National Treasures should be good. It comes out next month.
A Jeff Teague NT patch/auto RC is first on my want list and has been ever since I first heard the rumors of NT being made this year.

thanks for the info - it helped a lot. Does panini have some sort of contract for all rookies? I wasn't aware of that/must be in the last year or so?

I am specifically looking into Jrue Holiday. I'm a ucla fan and was looking to pick up some of his autos and it seems most or all are panini

That makes it easier then. As I mentioned and the poster above said - Panini was the only company with an NBA license this past year.

I def. agree with one of the above posters. Those National Treasure cards look great, so an autograph patch RC card from that will probably be the top rookie to get.

If you go by which Panini sets have traditionally been most collected in football (since this is the first year in basketball, imo it's the best comparison). Some other rc's to pick up are probably the Contenders RC auto and the Absolute RC Auto. LCM and Limited are popular as well.
And if you have the cash - the best cards to own are always the lower number cards. Things like 1/1's. Jersey patch cards, jersey tags, low serial #, etc. Those will be the big $ cards if he breaks out.

Should be able to get good prices now that it's the off-season. The higher #'d auto's don't seem to be very expensive for him, so looks like you can get a lot of nice cards for cheap, so seems low risk - potential high reward.

Classics has really been the only well-designed set. The market reacts to quality - and as a result, that's probably the set with the best all-around resell value.
