So, in the past I've typically avoided these types of patches due to patch faking but I felt better about these:

The one on the left is from 100th anniversary of the AL patch worn in 2001.

I know that playoff had this patch for use because I also have this card:

I found this picture from an auction for an 01 Zimmer GU Jersey, and the stitching looks similar.

Compare that to a patch sold by mlb.com

This has the stitching on the baseball closer together and it looks thicker. Similar to this patch which sold recently, which I'm 99% sure is fake.

The second patch is a 100th anniversary patch, which they wore in 2003. The stitching also looks high quality on mine.

Here's a patch from a GU jersey via steiner auction:

and here's one I found on ebay

I was also able to find a few more images from worthpoint with the same patch in the same card

Does anyone see any flaws in my logic here? Any reason to think they might not be authentic from what you guys can gather? Both sellers also claimed that they pulled these themselves, but that's always +/- unfortunately.

Thanks for the look!

I like both of the cards you bought to be authentic, the tipping point would be to check the seller's items to see if they have any other "too good to be true" patches. But if they don't for the most part and their feedback is good (let's say 1000+ positives) I'd feel good about it. The reason I say that is because A) the card on the left has 4 people if I'm not mistaking, a patch faker would be very, very unlikely to tamper with it to only alter a single Posada patch as the Mussina is very generic. The card to the right is not one of the thicker patch cards if I'm not mistaking - so again it would be a difficult one to fake and patch fakers run the risk of ruining the card when altering the patch.

Finally, though I couldn't blow up the images the corners look good. In the FOTG one the corners do NOT look good, to me I couldn't definitively say it's fake but it certainly does raise some red flags. I know this isn't the kind of approach you were looking for, but my opinion just based off of those factors is both are good. Again this is more of a theory just by looking at obvious factors so it could not be definitive, but I do feel good about both cards as well.

Thanks for your input and you are correct. The absolute is a 4-player GU with the other GU pieces being normal swatches (i have no idea why they didn't make the Matsui a prime, which they didn't intend to based on the wording below the jersey swatch)

I like the cards you picked up!

I just have a hard time thinking that every time there is a decent card made with a decent patch, first thing that comes to mind is that it is fake. I know there are people that put patches in cards and sell them (whole other thread). I cant see the big card companies intentionally buying 'fake' patches and putting them in cards. They would have too much a stake to do so. Could the card companies buy stuff under false pretenses? Yes. I just cant fathom a card company CEO sitting in a room and deciding to purposely use off the rack stuff from a sporting goods store and selling as game used. Maybe Im wrong?

Again, Nice Cards!

Thanks!

I have never personally worried about card companies themselves putting "fake" patches in their cards. Unfortunately though, given the existence of people altering cards once they've made it to the secondary market, it has personally forced me to do the extra little bit of research and looking for signs of alteration before being comfortable when purchasing a premium patch.
