Since being dropped from the starting rotation, here are his numbers: http://www.baseball-reference.com/playe ... g_gamelogs

7 G, 12 IP, 2 ER, 1.50 ERA, 15 Ks, 3 BB, 5 hits

He allowed no runs in 6 of the 7 outings. It seems like this was just what he needed to get him on track. I would love to see him pitch the 8th (like Mariano Rivera did in 1996 when Wetteland was the closer) and move into the closer's role when Rivera retires. Rivera turns 40 this year, and although he shows no signs of slowing down, you can't expect him to be around for too much longer. Remember, Papelbon was a starter too before becoming the Red Sox closer.

Should Hughes be groomed as the next Yankee closer?

Hughes=Starter
Joba=Closer

That's what I think will happen after Mo retires.

Updated stats as a reliever:

14 games, 20.1 IP, 25 Ks, 5 BB, 2 ER, 0.89 ERA, .143 BAA with an OPS allowed of .414

I hope he continues in this role.

this is what should happen, but the steinbrenners are focused on making joba a powerhouse starter. which is dumb. It takes just so many times to see a 98 MPH fastball , and eventually you'll realize to choke up and swing early.

They might have a case if Joba still had a 98 mph fastball.
