The Phillies have signed first baseman Ryan Howard to a five-year, $125 million contract extension, a person close to Howard has told Phillies insider Jim Salisbury. The extension will kick in starting in 2012 and will go through 2016.

Holy crap. I really like Howard and all but paying a 255 pound guy (in a league w/o the DH) an average of $25MM for his age 32-36 years does not scream fiscal responsibility.

I'll bet that this contract is a fairly large albatross by the end of 2014.

big risk, big reward.. but if youre in the sirbuyalot club, then you have to spend like a premium member.

this will help aging players get more money I bet.

I love what Will Carroll said...

They just paid A-Rod $ to Fred McGriff.

Is Will Carroll anyone important?

To someone who appreciates statistical analysis and baseball research: Yes

To someone who makes unsubstantiated and insane proclamations: Probably Not.

You can't expect a guy like this guy to know what PECOTA is.

you mean Fielder and his one home run?

Someone was bound to say this....

Yes, Fielder and his one home run......and his better plate dicipline, average, fielding, and much younger age.

Yes....that Prince Fielder.

The thing that would worry me about Fielder is that even though he is good (not debating that), and young, he is up around 270 pounds at 5'11". That doesn't bode too well for his physical health down the road.

Just my $.02.

Why do I see so much of the attitude "If they don't agree with me then they are morons" around here?
