Honestly, the people that should be most pissed about this deal (other than Phillies fans) is the front office of the St. Louis Cardinals. Albert wants to stay in St. Louis, but he isnt going to take a big time discount just to stay. If Howard can get $25 mil a year while not on the open market, Albert can truly ask for the moon. The difference between the two players is as big as the Grand Canyon, and their salaries should reflect that.
Back to the contract, its just a ridiculous overpay for home runs and RBI. Howard has only been worth that amount ($25 mil) once in his career, and his chances of doing that again during the duration of his contract is slim to none. He's been, at best, the 3rd best player on that team since 2006, but he is being paid like the best player in the game. He doesnt walk enough, plays a non-premium position, and his top comparables have faded into oblivion at the age in which the contract covers. For as many smart moves the Phillies have made in recent years, this is a huge mistake that will look really bad in a few years, especially when they dont re-sign Jayson Werth.
