Today's photo of the day is a sports/Hollywood related photo as it features Hollywood legend Gary Cooper playing baseball legend Lou Gehrig. This "still" photo was taken during the filming of the movie Pride of the Yankees in the year 1941. This movie was my favorite when I was growing up and since we only had three channels (yes....before cable and DVD's) I would have to wait for the baseball season to come around so I could watch this flick.
This film was filmed at the old Wrigley Field in Los Angeles where so many other baseball films and television shows were shot at including Home Run Derby, Pride of St.Louis and various other television shows. This shot is not only cool for the historical Hollywood value but it shows some other players such as Bill Dickey (second from the left) who appeared in the biopic. The photo may also even show the back of Babe Ruth's melon as he was present in this scene as well as appeared elsewhere in this movie.
