The Pirates Caravan kicked off yesterday, with both caravan groups attending the opening event at Seven Springs, a ski resort owned by the Pirates owners. The event is essentially a mini Piratefest, with games, autograph signings, and various other activities. I got there about an hour early, and had a decent spot in line. We were able to get through the first autograph group pretty fast, but the autograph line was huge. My girlfriend was more interested in playing some of the games than getting back in line, so most of the other autographs are from running to a guy here and there as they moved through the small convention hall.

Bob Walk was essentially stationed at the corner of the bar all night, and was in an understandably talkative and friendly mood all night. Charlie Morton was a late addition, after had to pull off the caravan due to flooding in his house. Charlie was incredibly friendly, signing autograph and talking with fans the entire night. He seemed to genuinely enjoy the experience...I just wish he had a few more cards available. Forgive the horrible on the 8X10's. The photos are all in great shape, but the photo pages they're in are scratched up pretty bad.

I also added a few new cards to my collection over the last few weeks, most of which came from deals with board members. The Clemente bat card is my first gu of his. Also grabbed a few packs of 2010 Topps hoping to hit some cards to get signed at Piratefest. No such luck, but I do like the look of this year's set a lot more than I expected.

Man, wish I had known that Steve Blass was going to be there; would have liked to send a card of him to get signed! Very nice group of autos you got there; congrats! :)

Dave, how was the turnout at the Uniontown stop? I'm probably hitting the Washington stop tonight, and I'm trying to get an idea of how early I should get there.

I love the new photocards they have. The action shots look a lot better than the old studio photos.

JackLondon-Any particular card you would want signed of Blass? I think I have a few doubles laying around, and would be happy to get one signed for you if I see him at Piratefest.

I would love to get a card/photo signed where he is flailing his arms during the pitch follow-through! Not sure which year it was (73?).

I will gladly send you paypal to pay for it. If not, I still thank you for the offer! And, if they allow personalizations, "To Andrew" would be cool. Either way, thanks for the offer. :)

Re: Pirate Caravan Haul and Recent Pirates Mail

Mark we were at the mall at 5:15 and there were only about 10 people in line ahead of us. there were a lot of people there and the line went for as far as I could see. I would definitely recommend getting there pretty early. I really like the new player cards as well. not only because of the action shots but also they feel a lot better because they were printed on a heavier cardstock.

Re: Pirate Caravan Haul and Recent Pirates Mail

Thanks Dave. I was planning to get there around 5:30, though I should probably leave a little earlier to account for rush hour traffic. Were the players signing multiples?

Re: Pirate Caravan Haul and Recent Pirates Mail

Good. Hart is the only one I really need multiples of. I printed up a couple of 8X10's, and would hate to have them go to waste since he won't be at Piratefest. The rest of the guys I can always get this weekend if need be.

7 of the 12 Pirates in Topps series 1 will be at Piratefest. Of course I pull 2 cards of the guys that won't be there ::facepalm:: Now I remember why I stopped busting wax.

Re: Pirate Caravan Haul and Recent Pirates Mail

Just got back from the Caravan Stop in Washington, and figured I'd just update this thread rather than start a new one. I should have scans up by later tonight or tomorrow. I got there around 5:20 for the 6:30 signing, and was already about 30 people back in line. I had already had most of my stuff for Meek and Russell signed at the Sunday stop, but this was my first time getting Hart, and with my relatively new McCutchen player collection, I have a ton of stuff for him to sign. Everyone was very friendly, though McCutchen has seemed less fan friendly at both stops than he had been previous time I met him. Maybe it was just a bad week or bad time...who knows. Nothing else planned until Piratefest this weekend. Looking forward to the chance to hopefully meet Maz, as well as the unveiling of the design for his new state that will be going outside PNC Park. Pics should be up in a bit.

30th in line isn't so bad. strange that McCutchen wasn't very friendly he was very nice and talkative last night. maybe he was just having a bad day. looking forward to seeing the scans tomorrow Mark.

Re: Pirate Caravan Haul and Recent Pirates Mail

Here are the scans from last night. One of my friends decided to tag along last night. He doesn't collect (or really follow baseball at all), so I ended up getting double the autographs I had planned on getting. I also got an 8X10 of Hart signed that I forgot to scan.

I absolutely love how the Hart Black turned out. I really wish I was able to find the black versions of some of the other guys on sportlots, but no such luck.
