I attended the 2010 Pirates Winter Caravan stop in Uniontown last night. there were a ton of people there but luckily we arrived early enough to be near the front of the line. the lineup included Andrew McCutchen, Kevin Hart, Evan Meek and Bob Walk. the players were very friendly and signed multiples if asked and like every year the event was fun and a success.

here are my auto's...

Great stuff Dave. No Brown and JR? The silver looks good on the 8X10. Did you ask for that or did Andrew do it on his own?

Am I the only one that can't understand why the only have black and silver sharpies for the player at the Caravan stops? They have blue sharpies at Piratefest, but never on the Caravan.

thanks Mark. Greg Brown wasn't seated at the table. he did the player intro's and stood off to the side talking to fans and signing if asked. I already have 2 of his auto's so I didn't want to keep other fans from getting one.

as for Russell I am not a fan of his so luckily the guy ahead of me was getting a bunch of stuff signed by him so I just went right around.

   Can't fault you there. I think Russell is an effective teacher, but when it comes to handling in game moves and pitchers, he leaves a lot to be desired. I expect to see someone else on the bench by 2011.

I don't like the way he handles the pitchers and he just doesn't seem to have any fire inside of him. it seemed like he only argued maybe 2 calls by umps last season. it would just be nice to see someone who appears to be into the game on the bench.

Nice additions, Dave! Wonder if the Angels do anything like that?

EDIT: Just did a search and I missed it last September! :x

Hopefully things don't get too crazy Saturday. I'm expecting to see a lot of people trying to camp out in the middle of the line around 10:30-11.

I plan on getting down there early. I have no interest in anyone of the first group, so I'll be letting people go past me if they want group 1.

thanks Andrew, Tim and James.

Mark I completely skipped over when you asked if Cutch signed with the Silver on his own and yes he did and I thanked him. he said he is always very well prepared for signings and he brings a Black, Silver and Blue Sharpie and 2 ballpoint pens for baseballs. it's always cool to hear a player knows what type of marker or pen to use on a photo or a ball.

I asked because at Piratefest last year, I had noticed Cutch signed my 05 Topps Update in black, and then switched to blue to sign my AFLAC card. I really appreciated the fact that he took the time to switch pens, and that he took enough interest to know which color would look best on the cards. I noticed Capps did the same thing, and Bob Feller is known for being very selective about what pen he uses on various cards. It's something very minor, but it's definitely appreciated.

Awesome stuff! That Cutch looks freakin sweet! I have had fun at this years Astros caravan although I have only gone to two of them. If I have enough gas...I may take some stuff to get some of the other guys that will be signing tomorrow. Always nice to get stuff signed for free.

And it is very cool they knew what to sign it in. Some players are horrible about that and it seems others genuinely want to give you a nasty looking auto so its resell value is poor if any at all. But every now and again you run across some who are good about it. When me and a friend went to the University of Texas to get the football team to sign during their fan appreciation day, the players signed for me using a paint pen and each one of them(we are talking about 10- 15 guys here) all knew how to handle the ball as not to smear it and even a couple of them blew gently on the marker so it would hurry up and dry. Very cool to see them do that as they aren't even professionals yet but they know how to do good autos.

nice balls Barry :o

predatorkj I was very happy McCutchen knew what to do to make the auto's look nice. hopefully he continues to care about how his auto looks and using the right marker/pen on the right item as he gets older.
