Player Collection Showdown Contest Suggestion Thread

First off, props to Zan for bringing this topic up.

If no one else wants to, I would happily organize and run this contest as long as I can get a few helpers (volunteers please let me know!)

Setup:From what I heard in the other thread, we are looking at two overall brackets: Junior (18 and under), and Senior (over 18). Within each age group there will be both a player collector and team collector category. Depending on the amount of people that show up, we will run 4 to 6 collection polls and allow half onto the next round, etc... until we find a champion. My first question is, should this contest be single elimination or double elimination? Should their be a 2nd and 3rd place prize for each division? Yours thoughts are welcome!

Prizes: Would love to hear your thoughts on this. Should each entry send a card in for something like a prize pool, or should we just take donations? I would be happy to put forth $50-100 worth of cards per section, but I have a feeling that we should have more. No prizes? Trophies? You tell me.

Dates:When do you guys wants to start the sign-up process?

I would say start the sign-up dates for Friday, gives everyone a nice amount of time to scan and stuff.. As far as prizes go, I liked the idea of $50-$100 eBay gift cards. It's a great gift, and could definitely be used to increase the potential of a collection. Otherwise, I really like the sound of this! Nice job soccerman!

Was thinking of getting the voting kicked up in March or April, give people a month or two to get their collection in full display.

Under 18, It's hard to believe they put it together themselves...when these 'kids' are posting collections that are worth what my jones collection is, it really boggles my mind. I don't think separating age groups really matters.

I dont think any under 18 collection matches your jones collection.Its not really that hard to believe.No one else in my family collects(or collected) cards except for my dad but he hasnt collected in over 10 years.

That said, if they have the best player collections they deserve to be noted for it. I honestly think bragging rights are enough, but if you want to go the prize route I recommend no prize to begin with. If members feel the need I would suggest prizes sent to the winner on the generosity of the board. I will have $20 coming out of purchases for my collection for the under and over 18 winners when all is said and done. If 10 members follow my lead it will provide a nice addition to the collection. If not, the winners will receive bragging rights and $20.

I don't necessarily think it really matters who has a "better collection" anyways.I mean...honestly there are a lot of great collections out there but the only thing that matters is if a person enjoys their own collection.I collect the crap out of Bagwell but there are always bigger sharks in the water so to speak and I have spoken to many people who could give a crap less about my amount of cards or the quality of them.I have even spoke to a few people that only have 3 or 4 cards in their entire collection.They didn't care to add more.Of course those 3 or 4 cards may be worth mega bucks.I do know a fella that owns every Mantle card originally made from all of the vintage sets during his playing years.But he won't collect anything now.So can you say he has a good collection?A bad one?One that doesn't interest you because your not a Mantle fan or a fan of collecting only one player and only certain cards?

My point is its only an opinion.Personally...I don't think anyone here can have a better collection than anyone else.You may have more cards but they really may not be better than someone else's collection depending on who is looking.About the only thing you could say factually is who has the most valuable collection.And that does not signify better in my opinion.

I disagree. I'd say that most of those under 18 on these boards spend their own money on cards, not their parents. It's real easy to tell whose collection is "juiced" and whose isn't.

That all just depends on what happens from week to week.I know when I was still living with my folks I could spend every drop of money I made on whatever I wanted.Now...I spend money on my collection with the leftovers and scraps of my income.Sometimes its a lot and sometimes its nothing.The point is...when you have all of that responsibility...you lose all security of being able to add to your collection on a consistent basis.When your young and have no bills or very few...it leaves you open to spend on a consistent basis.
